/wng/ — Web Novel General
Previous: >>24846827

>What is /wng/ — Web Novel General?
A general for readers and authors involved or interested in the growing phenomenon of 'web novels', serialized English fiction posted to websites such as: Royal Road, Webnovel, Scribblehub, Wattpad, Archive of Our Own, Spacebattles, HFY, various personal author websites, and more

>Why read web novels?
Not for prose or tight editing or deep themes, frankly. As a whole, web novels are infamous for content sprawl and pacing issues. If you enjoy having millions of words to sink your teeth into to get to know the world and characters, though, you may be interested. Keeping up with other readers on a weekly basis to discuss the story's events unfolding is another perk, in the same way discussing an ongoing TV show might be.

>Why write web novels?
Ease of access & potential for Patreon earnings. Many successful authors gain an audience on their website of choice and funnel their readers into a Patreon. See graphtreon.com/top-patreon-creators/writing for an idea of what some are earning.
Also, once an author has earned a fanbase, transitioning into an Amazon self-publishing career is several orders of magnitude easier than starting 'dry'.

>The system behaves like a character
Dropped. Why do people do this? I don't want my stat screen to be an unfunny redditor. Just show the numbers going up bro.

Would you be partial to the system acting as a law of nature that the inhabitants of the LitRPG world happen to be able to access?

I've only read 2 webnovels with systems and in both they were a largely superfluous addition that didn't really need to be there.

/wolw/ here. PSA: don't post in our thread. Some of you are, and we can tell who it is by your posts. I shall now cease to post or even think about this general. Have a nice day.

What, do any of you anons think, is the primary influence behind the entire concept of a "system" in the Western webnovel sphere? Did it come from the Chinese, the Japanese, or the Koreans? Did it originate from the poorly translated JRPGs from the late 80's to early 2000s? What are the likely many causes of this phenomenon?

I'm fine with that. I'm fine with systems giving out impartial, objective information. I'm not fine with systems quipping or showing personality, because 95% of the time, it's just flat out cringy.

SAO lol
I mean technically .hack but nobody remembers .hack
>>24854039
That's the trouble. Best use of them is seeing characters grow in weird directions and learn unexpected skills but most of the time that only happens in "system apocalypse" settings which are boring dungeon crawls.

Isn't the mc, they being some kind of neurodivergent? I would like to point out (again) that RI is against any and all discrimination and intolerance of individuals and groups that may differ from the norm and/or are marginalized in any way. I would also like to remind that it's the people from /trad/ publishing who constanty spread hate and intolerance.

The message is clear, Great Love Immortal Venerable bless you all. Everyone is welcome here at /wng/, even the hateful people of /wg/ and /wolw/.

SAO anime was the super nova, easily, the rapidly accelerating downhill spiral modern literacy's downfall. Litrpgs was exported from Russia where it was super big with this one series over there and it sort of just collided with SAO and Re:Zero's influence.

It started with vr mmo stories, where it kinda makes sense. Then people started adding floating holographic windows to their “real” settings.

What? Have you ever played dnd? Or any ttrpg?
