I don't see why that would make much of a difference. Why does talking confer moral status? Maybe some ponies tried to stop it, and it just never caught on for the same reasons that veganism never caught on in our world. Ponies wanted their milk and cheese more than they wanted unrewarded altruism towards a foreign species.

Not really. Friendship only exists when it is mutually beneficial to both parties. That can be as simple as finding the other entertaining or fun to talk with.

Nobody will be friends with someone that is nothing but a bother/nuisance to them. In the real world, it's even worse than that, making people your friend only if they can use you. In that sense at least Equestria is better than this world.
