If you were a kid or teen in the 90s the last thing you wanted to be perceived as was a... well, a kid. No one wanted to be or look immature, so toys weren't precisely the biggest thing in the decade, and if you did happen to have toys, you would stop playing with them more sooner than later the second you felt like a toddler.
I went through that shit, and so did all of my friends and the kids at my elementary school. Everyone wanted to be a rebel so you would always see boys asking for basketballs, rollers, or skateboards, and you would see girls asking for makeup and anything that would make them look like Madonna. Everything else we wanted were magazines, vidya, cassette players, VHS, headphones, computers, cool-looking fidget toys, and basically anything but traditional toys, so it's not surprise G2 sold like shit and you don't know a single person interested on it (unless they are european)
You can actually see everything I just mentioned in My Little Pony Tales: it tried very hard to appeal kids of that era by including the basic 90s pack for any kid, and apparently it did really well and it was popular among girls (it helped a lot that it was aired on Disney Channel, if I'm not wrong) but they cancelled it for some reason (they probably didn't refused to pay the sweatshop chinks that animated it, and they refused to keep working on it)

It's this. G1 incorporated a lot more social situations and interpersonal/caring elements than something like the aggressiveness of G.I. Joe or Transformers. That appealed to little girls a lot more. The show was successful with girls, so lots of little girls asked for MLP G1 toys. It was more successful than something like Rainbow Brite, but still not as successful as Barbie. G4, on the other hand, incorporates stronger elements of adventure and action than in G1. So, it has correspondingly more male fans. Also, all the stuff about the features of the G4 designs appealing to autists, etc.

Because G1/G2 is more Spiritual.
That's really the core of it. G1/G2 is an odd era because it's willing to
(A) Explore harsh and complex emotions, which can be entangled in horrifying situations.
(B)Has a very strange thread of spirituality running through it.

G4 is superior to G1 and G2 in many ways, but we can sum it up that ultimately G4 has a better handle on Music, Storytelling and Characters.
What G4 lacks, however, is the spirituality and harsh emotions G1 & G2 have. G4 will have these focuses in *spots*, especially in seasons 1&2 (examples: Canterlot Wedding, Feeling Pinkie Keen, Return of Harmony. )
(Twilights Kingdom is a good example of a later episode dealing with these emotional themes, but is crippled from Hasbro interference and poor storytelling choices)
G4 seasons 1&2 handling of emotional introspection are close to G1 generally, but quickly drifts away from that as time goes on.
When G4 really starts to lose the plot is when Haber tries to make it into a marvel rip off. This results in a kind of bastardized Shoujo. The focus in magic becomes replaced with a focus on "action".

Now, what this boils down to, is that G4 differs severely from G1 in the sense that, while it may start out similarly (and even superiorly) in dealing with the two best elements of G1 & G2, it ultimately distances itself from them.
Again, this is the spirituality and the harsh emotions.
G1 & G2 in it's best moments is all about these. Theres a bizarre thread of spirituality running through that era. And it's willing and able to explore emotional situations which are complex, harsh and even horrifying.
This is made best an example in the character of Galaxy.
Women who are cerebral typically like these themes more than men, they like them alot. So women who like G1 & G2 are in love with the generations for its weirder aspects of Spirituality and Harsh Emotional Introspection. On top of that, the watercolors of the G1 & G2 era play into these two elements alot. It makes it feel very dream like.
If G4 retained the Spirituality and Harsh Emotional Introspection, it would have a larger female fan base.

G4 in it's best aspects was Faust doing everything "Right" that G1 & G2 got wrong. G4 was meant to be the "good" version of the earlier eras.
Unfortunately once other people get into the mix, we see this get lost, as the shows drifts into a focus on action instead of "magic" properly.
It's interesting that, the more cerebral fans of G4, zero in their focus on the "Magic" and philosophy present within this era. To the point of sometimes outright ignoring anything post Alicornification. Which is also typically more appealing, again, to the female fans.
