Friendship is Magic's designs were made to easily go off-model for comic purposes and for the characters to be more expressive (see Pinkie Pie), I'd say at the expense of looking less like horses if you compare them to previous generations. But along with the big bishoujo eyes, their plasticity are a trademark of Lauren's designs and another jewel in the crown of FiM's magnificence.
