Pretty sure Faust had no plans for her besides her redemption. Seriously, a couple episodes spent with Sunbutt and Moonbutt doing sister shit they haven't done in a literal millennium would've done wonders for their characters. Are writers universally retarded no matter what?

176

>You spend several days in your bed, partially asleep, and partially awake.
>And in contrast to your previous blackout moments, you actually have real resting phases now.
>No coma, but genuine, proper sleep.
>You rest and recover, and you can almost sense that the symptoms of your quasi-poisoning are fading as your body gains the upper hand.
>The number of fits decreases, the temperature sinks back to mostly normal levels, and you generally do not feel as if you were on your last leg anymore.
>All in all, you are making progress.
>And roughly sixty hours later, you feel fit enough to get one step further.
>It is time for you to test your boundaries.
>So you take one deep breath and mentally prepare yourself for whatever is about to happen.
>Then you raise your upper body and try to sit up straight on the edge of the bed.
>Naturally, #deca.mare is right here too.
>She has stayed with you almost without pause.
>The exceptions were a few hours at a time in which Sky Squall or Firefly have taken her spot whilst she was taking a break.
>And she sees what you are doing.
>"Anon? Do you feel ready to get up?"
>#deca.mare's tone is genuine and friendly, albeit slightly reserved.
"Yeah, I've got to give it a try. The forced off-time is starting to get dull."
>#deca.mare comes closer to support you.
>"I understand that, Anon. But please do not rush these things. You might harm yourself."
>You look her in the eyes and smile.
"It's okay. I think I know how much I can push myself."
>She sighs, but ultimately plays along.
>"Very well. Let me help you."
>Which she does.
>#deca.mare helps you to free yourself of all the external sensors that are attached to your body.
>The respective readings disappear from the nearby screen one by one as the attachments get removed.
>Once you are free, you decide to test the waters by standing up.
>It is a fairly unsteady affair at first, but thanks to the lowered gravity on the ship, you manage to hold your weight relatively competently.
"Hm, not bad."
>#deca.mare watches you as you take your first careful steps, and she remains close by.
>Likely to catch you if something goes wrong.
>"And? How are you now?"
>You assess your impressions for a few seconds before you respond.
"Not fully there yet, but it works well enough."
>Her watchful eyes are still focussed completely and solely on you.
>"Any signs of symptoms? Or side effects?"
>You shake your head.
"I'm a bit shaky, that's all."
>#deca.mare nods and heads for the door.
>"Just a moment."
>She disappears into the corridor, and re-emerges less than a minute later.
>With a familiar wristband between her teeth.
"Oh, the health screen."
>#deca.mare nods and stops right in front of you.
>Nothing needs to be said.
>For you know what #deca.mare is asking for.
>You take the wristband and put it on.
>The device activates itself as soon as it registers your presence.
>Its tiny screen lights up, indicating that the wristband is working correctly.

>#deca.mare's ears perk up, probably because she is attentively evaluating the data she receives from the health screen.
>"Your pulse is still not fully stable."
>You shrug.
"It feels like it's a tad bumpy too. But compared to the last days, it's nothing."
>And she agrees.
>"True. Your condition has improved a lot. But please, be careful."
>You decide to put #deca.mare's worries at ease.
"I promise."
>This, combined with the constant input she receives from the wristband, is enough to silence her worries for the time being.
>"Thank you, Anon."
>She inhales.
>"What do you want to do now?"
>You look at the door.
"Going for a walk. You know, to get some life back into these idle bones."
>#deca.mare is hesitant to agree, but she has no real reason to be against the proposal.
>After all, it is a good idea to fire up your circulation.
>As long as you do not overexert yourself, it can only help you.
>"As you wish. Wherever you want to go, Anon. I will follow."
>Not that you can visit many places here.
>The deck has a fairly limited number of rooms, and a stroll in a space suit is definitely not the kind of trip that #deca.mare had in mind.
>Still, she lets you decide.
>So you choose to carefully walk towards the door.
>Then you go into the corridor, and head for the main hall.
>It takes you much longer than usual to get there, but that is good enough for a first try.
>The most important thing is that you can do it at all.
>As you arrive at the main hall, you check the room.
>The altered gestation unit is still installed and technically ready to be used, but the presence of four additional heavy utility units tells you that #deca.mare and the others are ready to dismantle the machine and to stash it away.
>For later use, of course.
>Hopefully much later, as you think to yourself.
>And as your gaze wanders across the room, you notice something unusual on one of the large machines.
>A Pegasus is lying squarely on top of it.
>On closer inspection, you quickly notice that it is the sleeping form of Sky Squall.
>Apparently, he has grabbed a pillow and a mattress, and is using, for some reason, the surface of the automaton as a makeshift bed.
>You turn to #deca.mare and whisper to her, as you have no idea how firmly he is sleeping.
"What is Sky doing here?"
>#deca.mare chuckles.
>"Sleeping. I thought this would be obvious."
>You tilt your head and grin.
"Come on. You know what I mean."
>#deca.mare shrugs and answers your question.
>"Sky is taking a break. He and Firefly have decided to take turns so that one of them is always working and on call to help me in, you know, potential cases of complications."
>Which implies that the other is taking a nap at that time.
>So far, so clear.

>She has not given you any explanation as to why he is resting on top of a massive machine in the halls rather than a proper bed.
>But you can piece the rest together on your own.
>Since he is alone, with nothing going on that should remain in private spheres, Sky Squall prefers open places to rest.
>And any open environment can do the trick, public or not.
>Well, as open as a place can be in the heart of a space ship, that is.
>You nod as you eye him from a distance.
"Ever the Pegasus. True to his namesake."
>You hear a muffled grunt as the stallion twitches once.
>Yet he is still asleep.
>So you lower your voice even more.
"His ears are still sharp too. Let's go to the command deck. I don't want to disturb his break."
>#deca.mare nods.
>The two of you effectively tiptoe your way across the hall.
>Neither of you says anything until the door of the command deck closes itself behind you.
>"You were right, Anon. Both your vitals and your performance have gotten better already. All thanks to a tiny trip."
>Tiny indeed.
>The "trip" has effectively been nothing more than a few minutes of walking, standing, and a touch of sneaking.
>Still, the results speak for themselves.
>#deca.mare and you walk down the ramp and head for the main screen.
>And as you have expected, a certain magenta Pegasus mare is already here, sitting on a cushion right in front of the inactive cryo unit.
>Firefly stares at the screen, deeply lost in her own thoughts as she skims through some charts and numbers.
>But just as she hears your approach, her mind snaps out of its contemplation.
>She turns around.
>"Anon! Nice to see you back in action!"
>Firefly stands up and greets you properly with a hoof bump.
"Thanks. I'm glad I haven't completely forgotten how to walk."
>The mare shrugs.
>"Looks good enough in my eyes."
>Then she points at a container behind the cryo unit.
>"Do you want a cushion too?"
>You shake your head.
"No, I think I prefer to stand for a bit. But thanks for asking."
>Firefly nods once.
>"Very well."
>Something changes on the main screen.
>Firefly has requested some pieces of intel about a remote region of western Equestria.
"What are you working on?"
>She takes a breath and smiles.
>"Our future life."
>Firefly pauses on purpose.
>"We were looking for suitable places to settle. And I think... Sky and me have found one."
>She certainly counts on catching your attention with that comment.
>And you do not disappoint her.
"That's great. Which one is it?"
>The magenta Pegasus turns to the screen and changes some settings.
>A detailed map of the realm of Equestria appears and fills almost the entirety of the screen.
>Some seconds later, the system highlights a spot in the western fringe region.
>A mostly grassy lowland environment, about thirty kilometres away from the mountains which will later be known as the Unicorn Range.

>The map zooms in on what appears to be a small village.
>An Earth pony settlement, from the looks of it.
>"May I present to you: Summer Shine. Current population: Forty three ponies."
>Well, what you see matches very well with Firefly's description.
>The place is an assortment of smaller wooden and stone houses, connected by a number of trails which also lead to a singular road.
>Said road seems to be the only path which leads into the wider world beyond the village.
>Other than that, the community is practically isolated.
"Cosy, quiet, and far off the public radar. I like it."
>You look at Firefly and grin.
"But that's not all, right? If you consider to pick this place, there must be more to it than that."
>Firefly laughs.
>"You can bet on it, Anon."
>She takes a breath.
>"I think you've guessed it already. This village was founded by Earth ponies."
>You go on.
"And the forty three inhabitants are exclusively Earth ponies, I presume. Mostly farmers and craftsponies to boot."
>Firefly shakes her head.
>"Close, but wrong. A family of five Unicorns is living there too. Two parents with their foals."
>#deca.mare speaks out what Firefly is implying.
>"But no Pegasi."
>The mare nods and grins.
>"Exactly. The inhabitants have no local weather support. They rely solely on external Pegasi teams to come by when they need them."
>Which sounds very familiar.
"So we run with the same argument we used to spend a few days in the storyteller village, only with more permanent implications this time."
>Again, Firefly shrugs.
>"You make it sound like some kind of scheme. But it would be a good deal for the village too. A small group of Pegasi who can help with the weather at any time? You know that's very sought after."
>A pause.
>"Some of the prouder Earth ponies will never admit this, but even they would prefer to have some Pegasi around."
>Then she laughs.
>"And a veteran team like ours? We'll be our weight worth in bits!"
>You clear your throat.
"Remember, we're long dead, Firefly. We'll return to Equestria as blank slates with new names. The fame and reputation of our past actions won't help us."
>The mare sighs.
>"I know, I know. And that's fine. We show them what we have in store. That will convince them."
>You have no reason to doubt her words.
>After all, the three of you have a figurative treasure trove of flight experience to rely upon.
>And #deca.mare will have no trouble to work with the Earth ponies either.
>Firefly is right.
>The village will most certainly welcome you with open arms.
>The magenta Pegasus goes on.
>"Believe me, when we give them a demonstration, they'll make an offer before we can even ask."
>She smiles.
>"And the village has the perfect vacant site too."

>You look at her and #deca.mare in turn.
"What kind of site?"
>And #deca.mare shrugs, indicating that she has no idea what Firefly has in mind.
>Whatever Firefly and Sky Squall have planned, they did it without consulting her.
>Firefly points at the screen.
>It zooms in even further.
>The main screen now shows a singular house.
>Moderate size, solid stone walls, and a roof made out of wooden beams and what appears to be thatch.
>Not exactly the epitome of luxury, but decent enough for a small village at the edge of the realm.
>There are two things which catch your attention, however.
>One, the roof structure shows signs of disrepair, as the visible holes in the thatch were certainly not meant to improve the ventilation.
>And two, it is slightly remote.
>With a distance of about three hundred and twenty metres away from the centre of the village, it is clearly the most remote building in the settlement.
>Of course, the distance is relative, especially for Pegasi, and not being right in the middle of the attention is an advantage for your plans as well.
>Yet you wonder what is going on here.
>And more importantly, why it is somewhat remote and abandoned.
"That's... uhm..."
>Firefly laughs.
>"You're asking yourself what has happened to this house, don't you."
>This was not a question.
"Pretty much, yeah. That's not some kind of haunted mansion, right?"
>The mare leans back with an amused grin and takes a breath.
>"No, its history is very mundane. You see, the village was named after its founder. A mare called Summer Shine. What you're looking at is the first residence of her and her family."
>A new display pops up on the screen, showing the image of an Earth pony mare.
>Vivid amber coat, light maroon hair and eyes, and a Mark depicting a ray of bright light surrounded by three green leaves.
>"Summer Shine and her husband were the first to move here. They became self-supporters and lived their first years completely on their own."
>You eye the mare in question.
"Completely? The whole deal?"
>Firefly nods.
>"And everything that it entails. They planted their own seeds, grew their own food, and... built their own house. The one you see here."
>You nod.
"Okay, that's clear so far. But why did they leave it?"
>Firefly goes on.
>"That happened much, much later. About four decades after the house was completed."
>Yet another pause.
>"Originally, the place was meant to harbour the couple and their foals. It's also why they didn't just erect a simple hut. They knew their family would grow. And for them, it was enough. They had several rooms, and the land provided a lot of open space for bountiful harvest seasons. They could have stayed there for a long time to come."
>You are still waiting for the turning point.
"But? What went wrong?"

>The magenta Pegasus shakes her head.
>"Nothing went wrong. But coincidences opened a new door. A second small group of Earth ponies crossed the path of Summer Shine's family after said forty years. They were looking for a place to settle too."
>A list of eight pony names appears.
>The members of the second group, you assume.
>Though it becomes apparent that these mares and stallions are not directly related to one another.
>"The two groups had a lot of discussions and ideas, and I do mean a lot, but long story short, both groups agreed to team up."
>Firefly inhales.
>"And here's the mundane turning point. The family had already been blessed with three foals of their own. So they couldn't house another eight in their home. The problem was, they couldn't build any more huts in the vicinity either. Because that's where they planted all of their seeds. The house was almost surrounded by plants."
>Of course.
>There was no one else around to take into consideration.
>"So, a different solution was found. The ponies decided to relocate and start a mutual settlement nearby. The spot where the village is today. The old house was still used, for a time, but eventually, everypony moved to the village. Then it was turned into a storage... until a new storage was built over there. Now it is vacant."
>You scratch your head.
"I mean, that makes sense. But I'm surprised they allowed the house, the home of the village founders, to come apart like this. Earth ponies usually treat their traditions with respect."
>Firefly shrugs.
>"I don't know. Maybe it was too much effort to keep it in pristine condition."
>You nod.
"Could be. The life of a farmer is always busy."
>Firefly raises her voice.
>"In any case, it's another advantage for us. I bet the Earth ponies will be happy to see somepony living out there again."
>It does not take you long to agree.
"Yeah, and two happy couples too. That's the best sort of omen."
>You eye the damaged roof once more.
"The thing is in need of some repairs though."
>#deca.mare chimes in.
>"This will not be hard for us. And the locals would surely be happy to help us out too."
>Firefly's grin grows.
>"That's what I'm counting on. It will be a breeze."
>Her ears perk up.
>"Oh... and I forgot to mention, the house has a small cellar."
>A little detail, yet an important one.
"How 'small'?"
>The mare remains confident.
>"Just the right size to install a few terminals."
>In other words, everything you need to establish an outpost.
>After all, you only need a couple of installations to check on and manage your daily operations.
>A crude miniature version of the command deck, in a way.
>Much less flashy and very basic in its setup, but nevertheless functional.
"Well, smaller is good. The weaker the energy signature, the better. I don't think anyone will spot it, but you never know."

>A little detail comes to your mind.
"Speaking of energy signatures, where did the Unicorns come from? You didn't mention them at all."
>Firefly blinks and grins wryly.
>"I have no idea. Our researches don't go that far yet."
>Well, Firefly and Sky Squall have studied the origins and early years of the settlement.
>So you wager that the Unicorns must be relatively new members of their community.
>You could of course ask #deca.mare to be sure, but you have other things that are much more relevant for your considerations at the moment.
"No problem, that's not pressing. I've got to wonder though, how keen are their magic senses?"
>You ask no one in particular, but it is Firefly who responds first.
>"From what I've seen so far, I'd say about as much as you can expect from an average Unicorn. As you said, they shouldn't be able to spot the stuff we'd bring along. No guarantees though. I'm no magic expert."
>Fair enough.
>And #deca.mare agrees with her assessment.
>"This is accurate. The presence of our equipment on the surface will be minimal. No regular Unicorn is able to sense it."
>You speak up next.
"Okay. No problems on this end either."
>You take a breath.
"You know, it looks like a solid place to me. What do you say, #deca?"
>#deca.mare smiles.
>"I have no objections either."
>You turn to Firefly again.
"And Sky is fine with it too?"
>The magenta mare nods happily.
>"He is. We picked the place together."
>Well, the conclusion is obvious.
>And you point it out at once.
"I guess that means we've found our residence."
>Firefly nods a second time.
>"Great! Then we can start with the preparations."
>A pause.
>"Somepony should tell Sky. He'll be glad to hear that our choice was the right one. I'd do it, but I'm not done with the numbers here."
>You are about to volunteer as #deca.mare beats you to it.
>"I will go and fetch him."
>Then she looks at you.
>"When he sees that you are standing again, he might be a bit impulsive. A bit too impulsive for your weakened state."
>This sounds like a complete exaggeration to you, as Sky Squall knows very well how far he can go with you, but you are not going to argue with her.
>After all, you know that it is pretty much impossible to beat #deca.mare's mother hen attitude towards your health.
>So you do not try to change her mind or to cajole her in some way.
"Fine. I'll stay here."
>Which is precisely what #deca.mare wants to hear.
>"Perfect. I will be back in a few minutes."
>And with that said, #deca.mare heads for the ramp to leave the room.
>You eye Firefly once more.
>"It would be great if you could give me an update. I've missed more than a week."
>And Firefly agrees.
>"Sure. Grab a cushion and take a seat."

>Hm, I assumed the proxies just go into a safe orientation while "sleeping".
Well, Sky Squall and Firefly have decided to follow their original natural rhythm as closely as possible even when they don't really have to do so, simply because it feels right to them. And that includes their sleeping phases. Of course, they could just park the proxy somewhere and take a nap or something, yet that wouldn't be quite the same.
>Or #deca.mare could have just temporarily switched off his hearing or something.
Good point. That would work too.
>I find it odd that they are using the proxies for things that can be more efficiently done in the virtual world.
The reason for that in this particular case was mentioned though. Firefly and Sky Squall take turns to be "on call" as they work, so that they can assist #deca.mare with their physical forms if something unexpected were to happen to Anon. As unlikely as it is, they would be their immediate backup in the case of a medical emergency.
>And why can every pegasi control the weather?
That's straight from the show. All Pegasi are able to perform at least basic weather manipulation, same as cloud walking. And they always could, even in the show. See e.g. Winter Wrap up for reference, as the Pegasi were clearing the skies and such in large groups. Sure, some will excel in the field when it is their special talent while others will only become decent at it, but the craft in general is open to all Pegasi, at least to some degree.
>So far I thought it will be just Firefly and Sky who is going to live in this village.
Nope, they planned to settle in the same place right from the start, as neighbours or something. Besides, it wouldn't make much sense for the four of them to depart at the same point in time if they weren't. This was intended to be a mutual experience.
>Do they even have anything more advanced?
Kind of? It's somewhat of a yes and a no, as full solid stone castles comparable to high medieval fortresses have been a thing since the Pre-Unification Unicornia era. Those were fairly advanced, and they're centuries old structures at this point in time. So their architecture is already fairly good. But at the same time, the material is still the same. Skilful masonry and woodwork alone are no indicator of a high living comfort, as anyone who has looked into the living conditions in medieval castles can attest to.
>Is it a straw roof?
Thatch, to be precise. It's similar to a straw roof, and usually contains some straw as well, but the composition is different. And based on my limited architectural knowledge, it also appears to be more durable than a pure straw roofing too.
>Is it that odd?
Not really odd. But it's nevertheless a considerable feat for a single couple.
>Again, I think its pointless.
You know, after thinking about this for a while, I believe I'm starting to agree. It's a thing that sounded more plausible in my head than it does now, after the fact.

>take turns to be "on call" as they work
But they can instantly switch from the simulation to controlling the proxies. And there is nothing preventing #deca.mare from being in multiple places at the same time. She can just appear in the simulation then tell Firefly/Sky that they are needed, while she is still controlling her proxy.
>as neighbours or something
This is why I find it odd. It is one house, at least for now. Getting some alone time will be hard. Don't know how tight do they want to tie their second lives together.
>It's somewhat of a yes and a no
This is why I asked. It was written in a way that it implies that its not as comfortable as something "modern", but they don't really have anything modern anywhere else yet.
>I believe I'm starting to agree
So far you have not implied that there is any "penalty" when they switch between simulation and controlling the proxy. No time penalty, nor they getting hazy or something. If there were any then to a certain point I would understand. But even in case of an emergency, even when they are controlling the proxy in the middle of nowhere or the busiest place they can just get receive an alert somehow (either injected thought or a visual overlay or just just a sound clue) that something is requiring their attention. They are not tied to the proxies, it's just a remote controlled vehicle/drone basically. And it can also go on autopilot for basic tasks, or #deca.mare can just take control of multiple proxies at the same time. Anon for example could not do this, he is limited by biology. Sky or Firefly maybe with a few modification to their consciousness, but they would not want that. Also, I don't think there is anything preventing from "cloning" their consciousness besides the moral rules/cloning shenanigans. They are just programs at the end of the day, no matter how sophisticated they are. Or as an other option which Anon could do is control (order) the basic automated tasks to do something. Eg he takes control of one proxy and orders the other to follow him, say certain things, etc. The reason why #deca.mare has a massive advantage is that she is not the proxy. She does not have to "exist" as a pony, or have any form. On the other hand Sky and Firefly does not know any other form of existence. Take Harmony as an example: is she tied to a pony form? I don't think any pony can monitor a million cameras/sensors simultaneously.

>But they can instantly switch from the simulation to controlling the proxies.
Well, the idea was that they can instantaneously rush to the scene, without any intermediate steps in between, like activating the proxies. Though I've got to admit that I apparently haven't thought this one through, as it doesn't hold as much water as it seemed to me at the time of writing. That's what I get when I type the majority of the chapter past midnight because of time constraints, I suppose. It is kind of undercooked.
>And there is nothing preventing #deca.mare from being in multiple places at the same time.
That's true as well. And alternatively, she could also simply "borrow" the proxies of Sky Squall and Firefly for a while to use them simultaneously if she had to. I guess it is as you said, my concept is kind of redundant.
>Getting some alone time will be hard.
They will manage. And in general terms, it's in a way fairly similar to their arrangement in the ship's living quarters. Each couple has a chamber for themselves, and the four of them share one larger "living room" together. Considering that they all know each other very well and get along nicely, there should be no cause for any real friction. If we now add one further room for the foals of each couple, that would raise the number of occupied rooms to five. That's something which a moderately sized house that was build with a family in mind should provide with ease. I envision it to be somewhat comparable to the barn of the Apple family, where everyone has a relatively decently sized room to live in.
And if one couple really needs the house for themselves for a while, I'm sure the four could come to an agreement which will make that possible. They're amongst understanding friends, after all.
>It was written in a way that it implies that its not as comfortable as something "modern"
Hm, alright. Then that was unintentional. I was originally thinking of describing the home as somewhat frugal, in contrast to an extravagant residence or something along these lines. A decent down-to-earth house, in essence.
>So far you have not implied that there is any "penalty" [...]
You're right. And I can't do that because it wouldn't make sense in the setting. That scene is pretty silly from a logical standpoint, and this derp is entirely on me. The ideas you propose are definitely better.
>They are just programs at the end of the day, no matter how sophisticated they are.
I'm not really a fan of that stance though. I mean it is, strictly speaking, not wrong, same as with #deca.mare in the most meticulous definition of the terms, but since they are individuals with a conscious intellect which is comparable to that of a human, I wouldn't refer to them as "mere" programs. They have become more than that. And yes, I'm aware that this is primarily an emotional argumentation rather than a rational one, but still.

I feel like Tree Hugger would want the family to be able to move from place to place instead of settling roots, what do you guys think?
Do you think Equestria is the type of place where you can literally set up a life in one town for a month or two, move on to the next and then by the time you roll back into town like a tumbleweed all the friends you and your kids made would still remember you and pick everything back up where you left it?
Or would you try to find a compromise about it with her? If so, how?

You'd need an awful big wagon to do so.
I'm of the opinion that bonds formed in the short term are very fragile, so unless you're rolling into the same places consistently you and your kids aren't going to be making any meaningful relationships with anyone other than the ones maintaining the caravan. Besides, children need the sense of stability not uprooting them every couple months would provide to develop naturally. You tear them away from friends every time they make any, it discourages making them in the first place since they're not going to stick around long enough to be more than acquaintances.

Human hippies do. That doesn't mean ponies do the same though. What if she's like an idealized version of what it means to be a hippie?

There was not much to idealize to begin with. Buddhism was meant to be some stoic version of accepting the rebirth cycle, not an excuse to reject responsibilities of an adult and go butt-naked in the woods

Nah, accepting is what i meant. There isn't even any mythos about ones who managed to do it, only ones who tried. Plenty of verses about how you should just expect to be a beetle in the next life though. All that stuff about "don't riot and you will be rewarded in the next life pls just trust me bro"
