Never played nor watched any playthroughs of it, so I dunno what to tell you, as >>42305458 said, it's pretty subjective.
Rimworld is all about colony management with occasional high-risk situations like raids or disasters, most of gameplay outside of those is sitting around, watching colonists mill around, and waiting for bad things to happen. If you ever played Dwarf Fortress and liked it then you'll probably like Rimworld.
As for me personally, I bought a Steam copy and haven't regretted a single cent invested. Though bare in mind that a lot of cool shit is paywalled behind DLC's.

Its fun, the ships are great for a nomadic style, that plus ideology makes it so you can just go from settlement to settlement raiding and pillaging with just enough time to heal as a tribe of bloodlusted neanderthals. Haven't tried it with the pony mods yet tho

Why spend time getting caravan animals, maintaining them, spending up to a quadrum on a two-way trip and risk both your guys getting killed and base counter-raided when you can just roll said base onto enemy tile, pre-packed with autocannons and rocketswarms?
