Yeah, the show gets successively more self-aware with each season and it's just a question of what point it officially turns you off. For me season 4 is where it starts being genuinely bothersome.

Oh right, making funny faces just means wanting to create reaction images. It has nothing to do with cartoonists just enjoying making dumb faces for the sake of it.

I have more of an issue with how good the expressions are rather than them existing. Pony.mov and Cupcakes HD were also filled to the brim with weird expressions but no one called them out for wanting to make reaction pics.

The issue has less to do with self-awareness and more with Haber and company using the characters as mouth-pieces for their opinions. I still can't stand Rainbow Dash saying "Lmao, Celestia and Luna never do anything, am I right?" because we all know how much she complained about it in all the seasons before that point.

It was the first tv show to be directly influenced by an internet audience in a way no other show has before. And it shows in how the quality suffered for it.
It was also kinda the last traditional tv show too. It was right at that time when cable tv was dying and internet tv was exploding.

I was thinking something similar some time ago. it had more in common with shows like Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends (for obvious reasons) than with its contemporaries like Adventure or Regular Show.
The changes it went through is also a macro-cosmos of the differences between 2000's shows, early 2010's shows & late 2010's shows.

I always wondered how you would avoid doing this as part of a creative team. Like you need to respond to feedback obviously to improve and expand on what works, but at the same time being so obviously sensitive to real world feedback makes the world feel artificial and really brings me out of it. That might be just because I hate meta stuff in general though. Seeing something so obviously cater and react to real life does tend imo to make it feel unreal and sort of insincere and less its own little world. I imagine that’s a hard balance to reach while wanting to respond to feedback. I think it’s especially annoying for escapist stuff which mlp 100% is for me
