Actually, The Ninth Gate (that's the joke) is a film starring Johnny Depp. It's adapted from a novel, The Club Dumas, with significant changes. Mainly it removed everything to do with the Dumas Fanclub, (Alexandre Duma, author of The Three Musketeers) and replaces them with a satanic cult.

So,The Club Duma has a lot of parallels with The Three Musketeers. With characters visiting the same locations in spain. Or another character that's essentially Milady de Winter.
It's the kind of story that requires knowledge of other stories to appreciate.
The same parallels could be laid out for MLP.

You have the Club President that is essentially role-playing a high stake "game" to make reality as interesting and adventurous as the one in Dumas' books.
The implications of a "lost chapter" that changes the story's canon, is of little consequence. Because the spirit is the same.

Then you have the satanist. Who is deadly serious about his own following. A forgery can fundamentally ruin his ritual. The consequence is fatal.

The irony is how they contrast each other. Despite role-playing, the fanclub president is living in the real world. While the satanist wants to escape into a shadow world.
