Hey where does one go to discuss comic books with other people? I can't really find anyone who read these comics.

At best we can discuss the official comics and only if somebody starts their OP with a triggering question such as "Remember that time Celestia abandoned her world for Sombra cock? Or that time Twilight said twice that it's okay to feel bad for Adolf Hitler cause he said sorry and did it for the right reasons?"

I never got into the comics but some of them seem interesting, do I need to read them in order to understand everything?

I liked Siege of the Crystal Empire. Sombra should have been redeemed in the show.

Golden rule: if OP starts the thread with a question, he doesn't want to listen to any answers.

And the thread magically gains 200+ replies despite OP not even being there to babysit it.

Did anyone here read this? It's been going since Dec 28, 2013.

Do fan comics count? I wanted to check this one out for a while since the art seems to look good, but I'm not sure. Is it good?

Of course fan comics count since it's the link right there. The problem with fan comics is that the premise or execution always suck, often both.

Only decently written fanmade comic book I've read was A Storm's Lullaby and that one conceptually and pacing wise has so many problems it hurts. The only reason I'm saying it's decent is because it's an actual writer that did her homework of understanding the basic of writing, sadly she has 0 experience with stories and fucked up the story royally by not focusing on the adventure portion and dragging out the ending for over 100 pages.

Only the main comic line, which is also the worst of the bunch.

Yeah, I read it but I don't check it out anymore because it's probably not going to be finished before my life ends.

I never understood the point of comics which don't even attempt to mimic the style of their original source material.

Oh there are official comics that mimic exactly the style of the show. You won't like them though.

For major published comics, just logistics, when you get down to it. Yeah, there's merit to letting artists' own styles shine, but really the publisher just wants you to hit deadlines while looking good enough. If you've ever seen a triangle graph, it's like that with Syyle Accuracy, Artistic Consistency, and Deadline Meeting in the corners, and the company will way prefer to lean towards the latter two for business. The sole exceptions are huys like Alex Ross that are so well known for the quality and style of their art that they're allowed to take extra time with it. Pic related as an example of Ross' panel art.
Are there artists that can near perfectly mimic fim's style? Yes. Are they able to do so in a timely and qualitatively consistent manner? Probably less of them, but sure. Are they the ones with their foot in the door and getting picked up by publishers? No

I enjoyed the Japanese comics, far far far above IDW's level.

This. They actually come a little closer to the feeling evoked by the original show (especially the first issues).
