Most "bronies" in China are greatly underage, kinda like the Reddit crowd but without all the woke shit. People still think it’s weird if you’re into ponies and not a girl, but won't resort to bullying you for fun. In worst senarios they ghost you and that's probably all. Back in high school my friends loved to tease me about that and we are still bros.
College though people just treat me like a fucking filthy degenerate and stay as far from me as they can cuz I'm into ponies as a guy, or just that I'm ugly, I honestly can't tell. There are two girls I know who like ponies and they are such social butterflies that everyone loves. I wouldn't say they are brony. it’s more like they’re into the pony trend that’s shown in this thread, which makes it seem cool to like ponies unless you’re a guy of course. Or just an ugly guy specifically??? I don’t even know anymore. One thing I know is that it's cool for women to be into ponies. Just go check RedNote, people are dropping a thousand yuan for a single pony trading card and have their own community about it, calling themselves brony. It's fucking wild.
But yeah, all the merch here in China does make mlp popular as hell in general but the actual brony community I'd say still stays the same as before to some extent. Some really hate the merch scene for watering down the fandom. I personally kinda like it as it keeps the show relevant so it doesn't fall into sad oblivion. Also it's pleasant seeing ponies everywhere imaginable.
Another curious thing, I’m sure you’ve all noticed by now that there’s literally zero G5 merch in China. I don't know if that's a copyright issue or some stuff but it basically confirms g5 designs are objectively hideous as fuck and nobody wants them.
