Maybe dragons should kidnap a pony baby and enslave it, and force that pony to sleep in a pet bed. And force the pony to act as a painful physical vessel for letters sent by the dragon king. And tell her what she can eat and what work to do and decide if she is allowed to go back to Equestria or not to find out about herself.

Episode idea: A pony raised by dragons comes to Ponyville. And meets Spike. "You're a foreign slave too?"

If Spike's egg was found 'honestly', they could have returned it to the dragons, and if they had to keep it, at least not give him to some random pony as her unpaid "personal assistant". If they needed magic to open the dragon egg why not just get someone to do that instead of making it into a student's test.
But it's okay because the "dragon code" says you have to be a slave to anyone who saves your life, I wonder who taught him that laughable idea.

Pretty sure Spike wasn't a slave. He wanted to be Twilight's assistant, so the point where he got jealous of a fucking owl for not being able to do those chores more. In the dragon migration episode, Twilight let him go to the dragon lands to learn about his kind. No attempt was made to stop him. Sure, she followed him, but that was only to ensure his safety, but never once forced him to return, which she really should have considering how young he is.

In Castle Sweet Castle, Spike said he wanted a proper bed as an excuse to keep Twilight away from the castle renovations her friends were doing. Twilight was willing to drop everything and put up with him to buy one on the spot, and before that, the library had spare beds. If Spike wanted one, he could have simply asked. He just prefers baskets.

So no, Spike's not a slave by any means. If he didn't want to be Twilight's assistant, there wouldn't be much she could do about it. He simply wanted it.
