What was the actual intent behind Starlight's creation and use in the series? Was it a mandate? Lazy writing to force the cast to take on someone with character flaws rather than a genuine addition to the dynamic?

M.A. Larson mentioned that they thought Season 5 might be the last season and were trying to think of a good ending (which is the exact thing that happened in Season 3), so they figured that having Twilight get her own student, just like how she was Celestia’s student, might work.

In my mind, it’s the closet thing we’re gonna get to a real finale. Take it or leave it. I see the McCarthy era as being non-canon, but moderately acceptable fan fiction. This is an okay enough ending to that era of the show. Nothing after it counts at all. The Haber era is even more insulting to the McCarthy era than the McCarthy era was to the Faust era.

No. Hasbro mandates set pieces that are used for the toys. Though those sometimes have baked-in plots the writers have to figure out, like the "Royal Wedding Playset" or "Friendship School Playset". They especially don't want new characters taking over, since the M6 were the pony money printers. When Haber tried to pitch the student characters taking over the show in S9, he was told to go pound sand instead.

I feel like this was the reason Glimmer was added. Alongside >>42381177 as a reason.
They wanted a pony that can learn and have flaws since the M6 has been through so much it would be stupid for the M6 to have a friendship problem. And giving Twilight a student could be a good parallel for a new character to shine as well as give Twilight new things to face.
I think having an entire season for her redemption is a bit too quick, but fine. My question is who the fuck is Twilestia's student in the finale.
