There's a good reason Cloudsdale is located away from other towns or any roads, but instead is over grassy fields. It's not strictly legal for Rainbow to have her house located on the outskirts of Ponyville. But it's much easier than flying from Cloudsdale to Ponyville each work day. Being captain of the weather team in Ponyville she gets away with more.
Rainbow had built her house just off the side of a path leading to Ponyville rarely used. Over time the wind blew it more and more over the pathway. She ignored the problem. One night on her way home she was given a large flagpole with her cutie mark on it, given to her by one of her many admirers. Getting home, she rested it on the condensed cloud drawer. From which it rolled off, pierced through the hardened cloud floor, and on that night it fatefully struck through the neck of a pony trotting to Ponyville.
Rainbow for several minutes hadn't even noticed the flag fall through the floor. When she had noticed, she flew down to see the pony had already died. Panicked "what should I do? what should I do?" she decided to drag the body off the path and bury it in the mud by a small body of water. Never had you seen a pegasus dig the ground with her hooves so fast, muddying herself. And indeed you, a stallion, did witnesses this. Would you blackmail Rainbow Dash? And force her to dress as a maid for you and be your special pony, or jizz mare. "Of course not!"
I don't know who got hit by the pole, maybe Amethyst after her and her little sister were returning from their picnic screaming at peanut butter jars. And then the filly could be involved in some way. Or maybe it was Beautiful Brass just because I want her to be apart of something. Octavia seems most likely, coming from Canterlot arriving at night in Ponyville. Rainbow's house and the way cloud buildings work changed and doesn't make much sense in general.
I was thinking below Cloudsdale could be fields of junk, because Cloudsdale is located high up, the water run off turns to mist before hitting the ground. There's a team in charge of cleaning up the ground below Cloudsdale, and with the earth pony and unicorn scavengers they keep it from looking like a landfill.
