I don't understand the show, so it has Canterlot which you go "ah yeah British medieval folklore castle, cool." and then after that you start to hear american cities/towns, etc. with pony puns which is just so strange.

If we put Equestria around an early 20th century level of tech, Manehattan almost fits. Horse-drawn taxi cabs were common prior to the advent of the motor vehicle, if we ignore the anachronistic paint job, so those aren't too weird. Realistically, a 1920s-accurate Manehattan would have a few less high-rises, but it doesn't totally break my immersion. That said, there's not much excusing the Statue of Poniberty.

People have been building huge statues since the Bronze Age, so that's not the problem. It's that it's a landmark that commemorates something specific to the country on Earth that it sits in. Dropping it in Equestria brings that history with it, to a world that's fundamentally different. It doesn't fit in. As mentioned prior, though, I guess it's just cute visual shorthand that tells the viewer that we're somewhere that's meant to be analogous to New York. It's a cartoon, ultimately. Silly things happen.

As I reflect on the show I'm not gonna lie it isn't embarrassing being a fan of the fandom. The fandom works varied widely in quality but when it was good exceeded anything the show did.

The show can be credited with the pony style and music and early on feelgood. But as it went on it failed to get anywhere near what it inspired in its fandom.

Fite me. The show basically sucks except for a few excellent seasons. And the stats prove it.

People had hope for the worldbuilding in the early seasons. Manehattan was mentionned but in AJ's flashback it looked like some 1920's new york style. And stuff like the fashion show or button's arcade could be seen as one off.
Then rarity takes manehattan came out and no, manehattan is JUST current new york, an it turns out all of ponyville is a bunch of hicks.

Actually, this gives me a good idea to fit into a story I've been workshopping that's mainly set in Manehatten. Might be a bit too lofty, but I think underlying plot to have Manehatten break away from Equestria to become self governing would fit with the more conspiracy and urban fantasy skew I'm aiming for.
Coincidentally, it also slots pretty well into this dumb mlp x-com game idea that's been stuck in my head the last week
