/Bale/ Beginner And Low Effort art thread - #69 (nice)
Welcome friends, ITT:
We make and share pony art, with absolutely no pressure to deliver anything that's technically good (besides having ponies in it, which makes it good by default)

Make something, share what you've done, and give feedback and motivation to help us all keep improving and creating!

This thread's focus is art, but beginner or low effort content of any kind is welcome here. If you do want to post about something else like music, gamedev, or crafts, though, just note that you may find better help and feedback posting it in the /create/ thread

Are you an experienced artist? Leave some tips, feedback, guides, or tutorials, they're well appreciated here!

Guides, tutorials and resources! Start here!

There are some ponies with legs that long, though the bottom-most section is too long relative to the upper two sections. All the other proportions seem within the range of standard pony sizes, in terms of leg length your drawing is roughly comparable to Celestia.

it's synfig or opentoonz. Both sucks but opentoonz sucks less if you use the flatpak cuz getting an updated package or compiling it yourself both sucks. Oh, also, that age3rcm dude made a generic pony rig for opentoonz. It's not very optimized and the puppets aren't show accurate but it's cool. If you have access to the leaks you can use that, i guess, but not on any libre software.

I am a fucking hack all I do is photobash and trace. I am a fucking cheat. I can't draw for the life of me, I try to do the exercises and all I get is fucking chicken scratch shit on a canvas. HOW THE FUCK DO YOU DRAW FROM THE SHOULDER?! I have a wacom and the desk space to fit said table and a keyboard and that's it. I have no freedom of movement where I live and I am only comfortable have the tablet to the side because of said limited space.

/ic/ is a beg trap anon. you gotta dial back the despair and focus on one thing first and foremost: having fun doing what your doing. drawing from the shoulder is intended for large strokes and movements for the most part, then the elbow, then the wrist, fingers, etc. if you want to learn to draw from scratch without bashing, i suggest beginning with learning to construct what you see, i.e. taking a drawing or something and trying your best to build it with basic shapes and then the major detail, minor details. chicken scratch is common, the solution is line confidence. go slower, let yourself make mistakes and get the muscle memory set up right.
Anonymous No.42707597 [Report]
>>42707540
A good way to overcome chicken scratching/building line confidence is this lil exercise that I learned from a Peter Han class.
Basically, you set up the lines(like the black ones), then you do your best to either draw circles between them of varying sizes, trace said lines to become more consistent with your pen control, use a random blob to learn how shading/forms work, and then using simple patterns to both understand dark/light when broken down into simple pen strokes. All of these can be changed from bigger/smaller circles, weirder lines, weirder shapes, and different kinds of patterns. The important thing is, this is a warm-up, and afterwards you should try and draw something on your own. Good for newbies still trying to get their foot in the door and one day you won't even need this.
All done from the shoulder btw. Generally it'll tire out your shoulder starting out, but it's a good habit to build if you can manage it. That way you also don't get carpal tunnel or some other crazy shit.

Lmao, at this point it's their way of saying welcome. So what you're not the greatest at drawing right now, we all suck and or sucked when starting besides some exceptions. Take a step back and think why you wanna draw in the first place and have that as a goal always.

The Blueberry Curls picture I did was mostly based off of the Little Golden Book style, painters like Mary Blair, Mel Crawford, Scott Wills, Lou Romano and Sue Mondt are a big influence on my painting style.
Though I do also really like drawing in a 2000s-influenced style. I always felt it would be a really good fit for MLP considering season 1 had a lot of Cartoon Network veterans working on it like Rob Renzetti and Paul Rudish. Paul in particular is a big influence on me with his work on the early Dexter's Lab episodes and his pilot 3 Dog Band.
I think season 1 in particular has a lot of very stylized shots and composition that I enjoy, Applebuck Season in particular has this shot I really like of Applejack having the apple cart stuck between the two hills, I think that shot was framed pretty nicely with AJ filling in the empty space in the sky between the two mountains in the background.
Anywho, does anyone have tips on posing? I'm not too used to drawing quadrupeds.

Try to calm down, perhaps play a game or go for a run, or something. Then, when you feel ready, come back and focus on the fun. Do something you know you can do. From there, your curiosity will make you try harder things. This way, it's both a fun and a learning experience.

I feel like my progress hasn't been incredibly fast, but I'm glad that I've been sticking to it and still have ambition to keep learning. Most of my drawing time is spent on simpler doodles and stuff, but every now and then I like to up the effort a bit to see what I can do. I feel like a healthy mix of effort is great for keeping things fun and productive.

this also helped me a bit, krita has everything u need but the interface gives me autocad ptsd and is cramped as fuck on android so I use CSP but from the brief stint I had with it I remember it having all of the important functions, software doesn't really matter that much, it's like with DAWs where they basically have the same functions and it all depends on your preference

not to bad but I got some suggestions, the main thing is here rear leg is completely broken it seems like you took the approach of thinking it bends like a human knee and it doesn't. the green line and purple line are alternatives you could take to rectify that. the teal line is what I would personally suggest for her front leg closest to the viewer I think it generally looks better and less awkward but that's just me. her shoulders look a bit human like and her neck is a bit to short and thin but that's minor stuff that's easy to fix. I'd recommend studying horse leg anatomy a bit. Are you aiming to draw more horse like ponies?

Varies greatly. I've done paintings in a little under 2 hours and I've worked on the same painting for 4 months. I'm a pretty slow artist overall so I think the average for me is around 10hrs+ for a standard fully coloured and shaded piece. and around 2-3 hours can go for sketching while the rest is colouring/painting. Add 1-2 hours if I'm doing complex lineart. As stated though it varies a ton.

Thank you for taking your time to answer.
>It varies greatly
I see. That's actually a bit of a relief since then I guess I don't need to worry if I'm going too fast or too slow.
I have another question for you while I have your attention. That nose you drew, you kinda constructed it in 3D shapes, you split it into zones.
How do you think when you draw something 3D? Do you take into account perspective? There's always a side that's hidden by the object your drawing. Do you take that side into consideration? Do you use a lot of construction lines like contour lines on base layer that you later remove? Kinda like pic related?
The myriad of questions is because I'm impressed by how you draw, but I have a hard time asking what you do that I don't since I don't know it. You don't have to answer them all, if you feel like you understand my underlying question. Well, you don't have to reply at all either. Anyway, thanks again.

>How do you think when you draw something 3D? Do you take into account perspective?
Perspective, form and shape are all working together to give the drawing more depth. I strongly recommend studying form/shape as it will help you understand almost everything else you want to draw. When I draw I always look at the overall shape something has if i have a reff or I start with the absolute basics like a cube, circle or cylinder to build the figure bit by bit. But it is a bit hard to answer how I think because after a while of studying form/still life atleast you start to get an intuitive sense of "sculpting" on the page. Sometimes when I draw I forget im on a 2D plane and it almost feels like I'm in blender messing around. There are probably some videos out there that can help you here like proko on YT.
>There's always a side that's hidden by the object your drawing. Do you take that side into consideration?
It's always good practice to draw "through" your motiff so it gets the right shape, proportion etc even if that side then later gets obscured by something else. But in some angles the planes of a nose for example dissapear, like the side profile. Then I only focus on getting the side the veiwer see right. But ofcourse you should take it into account when studying.
> Do you use a lot of construction lines like contour lines
When I'm studying I use contour lines to easier understand the subject, how it morphs and changes depending on angle like in your pic. When doing my drawings I tend to use the concept of construction as a whole where ofcourse the construction lines comes in but also building the subject with various forms like cubes and cylinders. Then when cleaning up I see what I can keep so it still reads clearly as 3D.
>I'm impressed by how you draw
Shucks anon I appreciate it! Hopefully my sleep-deprived reply has some useful nuggets for ya. Most of this will start to click after practicing it concistently is what I found. I'm still not really there with my skill and I sure remember how I felt just a year or so ago when i started taking art seriously.

Well, first I wanted to thank you for your long reply.
Secondly, I wanted to say that I think your drawings look professional level to me but I once heard Arnold thought he looked like a twig so I guess it's hard for you to see that. And on the other hand, I suppose you have a more clear understanding on where you are lacking and such. However, I have felt in stuff (writing) that I'm more proficient in that sometimes I get lost in my self-doubt, so I thought I'd give you the reassurance that I sometimes feel like I need from others.
Thirdly, I might get back to say more on what you actually said, but then I have to write that, so I'll try in chunks.

The time-lapse is useful as I see you are testing your lines. Like do draw and erase or draw and undo until you get it the way you want it to.

Thanks anon. I don't expect that the video would be useful. The line-spam comes from the fact I refuse to use stabilizers and I just can't get long flowing lines in digital. On paper it's much easier and more accurate and you can just hover your pencil to test the line before drawing.
As for the advice, adding to the other anon, I think perspective, anatomy, the fundamentals are good, but drawing isn't about wrapping 3D wireframes around things, you're not a machine and you can't draw like one. Drawing from life is great because life is always accurate but also because you have to work with your brain first, and less with formal perspective and construction. These things can get you so caught up that you lose a feel for the thing you're drawing. Croquis is great because it's more about feeling the forms intuitively than calculating the perfect volumes on paper. I've seen a lot of people grind themselves away on fundies with this idea of improving fast so they can draw their things but never forget to relax and just draw things you like, and study as you apply to those things. First draw something you love, then spot the problems, and study in application to those problems. Being relaxed when you draw also helps you with confidence which is a big part of getting clean linework.
I recommend drawing on paper. Digital is handy and convenient but it's very bad for tactile feedback (maybe it's not but I have a potato computer).

In a similar vein, I have a tablet pc with a pen and a touchscreen, but I'm finding krita fucking awful to control. The touch tools panel helps a bit, and I managed to disable touch drawing. Any other tips like that? Considering disabling the touch screen altogether due to the frequent mistaps, but the toolbars are annoying to reach with just the pen.

Liking the perspective and detail on this one. A lot of people including myself have been intimidated by drawing until we realized you don't have to meticulously copy every blade of grass. Instead, capturing the essence/flow of the scene is best. Makes it more interesting and dreamlike to look at anyway.

Advice: try filling in shapes with a light-pressure swirling motion of the pencil, going in tiny motions for smoothness. Go back over an area repeatedly to make color stronger. This especially helps with gradations. I like how expressive pony's face is.
