I was about 16-17 at a local "festival" show (extremely small venue with a tons of bands playing one after the other), mostly there for the experience and to see Septicflesh, which is a fairly decent symphonic death metal band. One of the openers was this extremely cringy brutal death metal/slam band and the singer kept trying to make awful jokes that didn't land. I have hated brutal/slam DM since then.

I saw them with Dance Gavin Dance and Eidola (another "Swancore" band where two of the guys were also in DGD). I don't know how Rain City Drive got lumped in with these bands when they don't really sound like them. The only connection is their original singer was Jonny Craig but he left years ago when they played under a different name.

>live mixing was atrocious, it was 90% drums and vocals
>julian casablancas absolutely hammered, slurring in between songs
>clearly larping as jim Morrison
>he gets upset when nobody is really feeling the newer songs theyโ€™re playing, says YOU ALL WANT THE FUCKING OLD SHIT
>they go into a rendition of Reptilia with way too much autotune (he had it on for every single song and it sounded like T-Pain)

While I'm complaining, the worst headliner by far was Extince, a Dutch rapper from the 90s.
The show started more than an hour late. That's not unforgivable, shit happens, but this cunt did not have a flat tire or something like that. The entire time he was just sitting in a corner of the room with his entourage. I mean everybody could see him, while we're just waiting. There wasn't a DJ or anything to keep us entertained. So by the time he finally decides the time is ready, everybody is obviously annoyed. He starts performing, it's okay but not great so people aren't responding that well. This he cannot handle. He starts insulting our town, says that we don't knwo how to party and that the next town over people are so much cooler, etc. Apparently he felt like we somehow owed it to him to cheer despite making us wait forever. This douche tries to be a hype man for a minute... literal crickets. Finally, he just goes "ah fuck you guys" and walks off stage after three songs.

I saw /mu/'s favorite: Jacob Collier because my little brother's gf is obsessed with him but my parents also wanted me to go with them.
What could possibly be a worse opener than him? Some horrible music youtuber who did like Prog-Weird Al with just his synthesizers, guitar, and a drummer.
He motor-mouthed away a third of his set being PAINFULLY unfunny. He pointed to me specifically and made a comment and I just shrugged at him because I couldn't hear it.
And then Jacob played and the crowd was Beatlemania every time he picked up a percussion instrument or whatever and that wasn't much better but at least I was expecting him to be... that.

Aldo Nova opened for Blue Oyster Cult in their tune-up tour before going on the worldwide "Black and Blue" tour with Sabbath. They had a hit the year before with "Fantasy" and did a 20 minute set. It was competent but really nothing special.

In '77 I saw Elvin Bishop in Marin County and he was nothing special save for a couple of minor hits. Bt he was the star. The openers weer Sasha and Yuri who were on tour for one reason: they had escaped the USSR. The only English words they knew were "Rock and roll", so they repeated them. A lot. Otherwise, they were a generic lame rock duo. It reminds me of the scene in Moscow on the Hudson where Robin Williams breaks out his sax at a local jazz club and is awful. But the crowd was polite because he had just defected at a major NY department store.

I saw Chelsea Wolfe at the Berghain in Berlin and she had like 3 opening acts. Two were just kind of mediocre doom metal bands and in between there was this tranny (?) playing acoustic songs for 30 minutes. It was so boring and also since the Berghain has a strict no photos policy, every few minutes security guards would elbow their way through the crowd to reprimand people for taking pictures.
Chelsea and her band absolutely killed it though, just wish it had been one opening band only and a normal venue.

Not a band, but Prof opening for Atmosphere in 2014 was probably the worst opening act I've seen. He was obviously drunk, slurring his words and stumbling, and holding out the mic for two thirds of the show to a nearly totally silent crowd. The fact that he had dancers and confetti cannons and stuff just highlighted how ridiculous it was.

Black Country, New Road last year opening for Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds (who was great).

I went in not knowing much about them. Iโ€™ve never felt such visceral cringe and revulsion as I did hearing their cacophony. Thinking back I can almost smell their farts which they clearly love huffing to produce such absolutely awful, pretentious music. I absolutely fucking hate them, there is no band I despise more, that they dare exist annoys me on many levels.

The song with five oversized recorders was the worst by the way, that was the moment I left to go get a chicken burger and wait for Cave.

First time I saw Bob Dylan the sound was garbage, I couldnโ€™t make out a single lyric. I mistakenly thought he was a shite performer but the following six times he was excellent, so it can happen. Iโ€™m probably still in the minority for thinking heโ€™s well worth seeing beyond reasons of nostalgia though.

Some weird picks here.Don't you guys go to any smaller shows? I guess you can count yourselves lucky that you don't have to regulary suffer through awful local support acts. I can't decide between these two being the worst I have seen
"Das letzte Lager" opening for Profanatica
>last minute replacement for another band that was supposed to co-headline
>one drummer, one guitarist band
>guitarist looks straight out of Blade 2, with shades, tribals sleeves and a bald head
>they sucked so hard that the audience refused to applaud until they literally asked for them to do so
"Bird's View" opening for Soulfly
>show was scheduled to start at 9pm
>on a weekday
>there wasn't any info about any support
>they just appear on stage and play the blandest fucking indie rock, the audience did not like it one bit
>frontman is absolutely insufferable and gets visibly angry at people for not digging his landfill indie rock at a metal concert
>calls for a wall of death
>people form a circle but no one actually runs into each other
>he proceeds to end the set by calling the audience fuckers and throws his guitar pick towards the back so that no one can catch it (not that anyone would have bothered)

I've talked about it before but it was when they were touring for their first album. I'd never heard of them and Ian was swinging the mic around like people did back then and this dumbass hits himself in the head with it. Literally knocked himself out in this shitty little venue and spent the rest of the set writhing on the stage bleeding and moaning. They cut the set early and that was that. It's a shame it didn't kill him. He's an absolute monster and deserves hell.

kek, for some reason there is like a million mediocre metal bands with a bald guy wearing sunglasses. And the music sounds appropriately mid too.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7-bklix0hk
There are certain traits to these kinds of bands that I can't quite articulate but that always peg them as eternal opening acts that no one really feels passionate about. The moment I started listening to that song I could immediately visualize myself standing in some half-filled venue, with most people either standing still or nodding their head a bit and everyone just being bored waiting for the main act.

you recognize that 90percent of people are total homo normies at best and what they have to say about your act is irrelevant and just be excited to have a band that is playing shows in the first place. honestly battling the clueless soundmen were always the worst part. the goal really is to have fun and be funny and just put on your own shows in fish and chip diners and backyards with your own gear anyway.

now at some point 'fun' should take a back seat to the arrangements and notes of your songs being executed to near perfection. this is when you have to be the asshole and let inessential members go who can't hack it and screw up and make excuses like 'oh i'm just having fun.. derp derp' because as an old fuck i can't listen to some old era shows and albums i have been apart of when i knew it could have been so much better even then. when the desire to not want to rehearse becoems teh norm and eye rolling takes over from smiling is time to take a break from it all and work in a factory or something outdoors for a few months. but your options may be limited in this regard finding dedicated and capable driven members especially small town bands and so it is best to not do what i did/do and point out their errors loudly and obnoxiously on stage but the thing i say is i expect the same out of myself so get your fucking head in the game or go back to your basement this isn't about impressing the mundane audience of 8 people how loud you can play the fucking cymbal this is about being able to put forth into the air your sound and follow the inspiration of the greats so you and your kids can listen back and be proud.

I saw Faith No More back in like 2010 when they were on their first reiunion tour. the first opening act was some LA-sleaze-core garage-punk act that did a by-the-numbers cover of "livin la vida loca". we ended up booing them off the stage. after that this cheerleading squad took the stage and of course everyone thought "oh, sick, they're going to set up "be aggressive"" but, no, it was literally just a cheerleading squad doing one of their normal cheer routines. literally had nothing to do with the headliner at all. weirdest thing I've ever seen at a concert.
