Rock already died
Now rap is dying
Even pop is dead (if you ignore inflated streaming numbers, most artists can't sell stadiums anymore)
If anything, rock is coming back, in a few years it's going to be more popular again
There are lots of popular asian artists making rock and getting popular in the west because we killed our rock here

Man i stopped playing my guitar cause i figured rock is gonna be dead and i couldnt find any good rock bands from the last 15 years except qotsa and arctic monkeys but listening to 2 bands gets boring fast and listening to 50 year old acts also gets boring. Thats why i got into electronic music but i wish people listened to rock so that i could enjoy cool concerts and jam with my buddies. Rarely anyone wanna play rock these days.
We seriously need a new huge band the likes of nirvana, peppers or atleast the strokes

>Why is rock dying?
There quite literally isn't anything left to do in a rock band setting that doesn't amount to some kind of novelty thing with no substantial appeal.
There have been various genres that explored the entire spectrums of virtuosity, themes, scales, production values, moods, group sizes, etc., etc.. For each of these genres that formed over time you had pre-movements, the actual movement, post-movements, revivalist movements and counter-movements . Any tempo that music can be performed at has been used before, guitars have been tuned to every tuning that is feasibly useful and there already has been any band composition you could think of, from 2 piece bands all the way to pseudo big bands.
For each of these things you had fusion genres mixing and matching various aspects of these, or fusing with genres outside of rock.
There isn't anything left to explore.

Theres always something new to be done. Take nirvana for example, put yourself in the position of '91- its not punk, its not metal yet its catchy and something new.
People just dont explore the possibilities enough. What i dislike about rock these days is that its divided ad infinitum into million subgenres, all with some kind of diehard small fanbase who support all the acts who follow the formula of given subgenre. Theres nothing gutsy, nothing real out there, something that would unite all the rock fans and headline festivals

the problem is that rock is not currently supported by the music industry. therefore all these rock revivalist acts have to have some sort of gimmick or mass appeal to braindead normies to have any sort of success. this always results in terrible music. rock is best when the artist is just cool and doesn't care about success. they do it for themselves and the music that reflects that. the masses no longer accept the sort of music that attitude produces so it stays hidden.

All possibilities of getting a new sound with a guitar band have been exhausted up to the mid-90s.

Everything after that was either revivalist or autistic metal occasionally mixed with hiphop. Or pop punk which was basically also revivalist or a sort of poppified alt-rock

Yeah but like i said, i dont care about some subsubgenre formulaic act with its 1000 stans. I dont care about it being mainstream, i just care that a band has enough strength to their songs that they can get the crowd of 50k going. That its good enough that it consequentially hits some kind of a movement, doesnt have to be on drakes level of popularity. Call it relevance.
What is rock if its not 50k people jumping up and down to the sick guitar riff or singing along to the song

I think humans aren't supposed to have cultures that changes radically every 10 years. We're so used to the idea that there constantly has to be a new thing that when the possibilities are exhausted we think of a genre as being "dead". Was the music really ever good if we get sick of it because we're exposed to it for too long? Did medieval peasants yearn for someone to finally invent trap beats?

Musical styles should evolve slowly over hundreds of years with generations of rich traditions, instead of having the powers that be devise styles in corporate backrooms to steal as much money out of teenagers' pockets as possible.

Rock 'n Roll died when it lost it's connection to swing and became Rock. Rock died when corporations took over the music industry and made the music sanitized and generic. Imo Rock can make a comeback when it reconnects with it origins as a dance music.

I think rock died for a lot of reasons, but the main ones being how a few companies have consolidated basically all radio stations and material circumstances. I've been playing guitar for years and always wanted to join a band, but no one has the space for it. Most younger people are living in apartments or have several roommates, if you want to actually make music your best shot is just being a producer. The only rock bands you really see now are overproduced indie bands made by kids who are too well off. I think rock as genre needs people with a bit more grit to than them, but they've essentially been priced out of the hobby, much less getting airplay.

Threadly reminder that rock was only ever "alive" for like 2 decades technically speaking. It stopped dominating the charts by the 1970s when Disco and R&B took over and Country got its second wind. People were already saying "Rock is dead" by the 1980s. There is a reason "Rock" was never synonymous with "Pop" but was always seen as an alternative to it. The point I'm trying to make here is that Zoomers are chasing a dream that literally never existed in the first place. Rock being "dead" isn't new, if anything it's the status quo.

Mainstream music matters. How do you expect any band to make better music if they're doing it for free with no audience. The mainstream successes in rock trickle down to their peers, like what happened with Nirvana.

It's not Nirvana that killed it, but the engine behind alt-rock, which was genre hybridisation since the 80s.

So it's those underground bands like Pixies, REM from the 80s that 'killed rock' because they established the new recipe for rock to be transplanting a bit of pop, or a bit of 50s rocknroll but ironically, a bit of metal into a form that was as hybrid as possible.

Nirvana merely became a synthesis of that 80s dynamic, thanks to Cobain's songwriting skills. But even without Nirvana, rock would have still gone through the alt-rock phase and faded out afterwards. Because the undercurrents were already set since the 80s, there was no escaping that vortex.

Rock died when it stopped being badass and having danceable beats and singable choruses. Grunge was a fad that people quickly got bored of and then it was eclipsed in terms of popularity by post-grunge bands who infused it with some of the elements it lost from rock although this marriage was uneasy and not bound to last either.
It's why nu metal has been so popular and still is among zoomers. It might also be dark and gloomy but it's worked into braindead fun riffs and actually feels energetic.

12 notes is not enough. You need more than 12 even for some music that you don't consider weird or foreign. Barbershop is defined by use of a chord that's impossible to play with only 12 notes per octave. Here's a guitarist using more:

People got bored of regular old rock music and it divided into a billion subgenres. It's like the big things right now are djent and shoegaze which are.literally just noise. Same thing has happened to rap. Eventually music itself will die out, and our grandchildren will be listening to the same things we do.

Post a poster at a record store, go to university / college clubs or find facebook groups. You can find people there. Network with other groups you come across and then you have a scene going. Still trying to pull the strings for the 2nd.

>NOTHING LEFT TO DO
How about just make ROCK MUSIC.

No gay trendy micro niche shit.
Rock is ‘dead’ because all these faggots wanna do limp wrist demarco rock or gay polyphia metal or sleep token r&b imagine dragons fag shit or chill tame impala shit.

ROCK is literally right down the MIDDLE.
& No one has been doing that since the early 2000’s apparently.

Literally bands like JET, QOTSA, FOO FIGHTERS, WOLFMOTHER.
Actual rock bands.

The problem is lack of testosterone and thinking it’s corny to play loud and simple with choruses that fuck.

Zoomers love to be overly sensitive DIY poor larp ‘please discover me’ fags instead of just owning up to ‘WANTING TO BE YHE BIGGEST BAND IN THE WORLD’ and owning it. These fags don’t want success nor do they have the energy to want to change the world.

This guy gets it. Rock n roll will thrive again once musicians start treating it as an actual tradition, as it's been long enough to call it that. I love 90s alt rock, but I find it much more valuable to ''study the masters'' of the 50s, 60s and 70s so I can create music with a timeless universal quality. Ironically, that's what the best 90s musicians did.
