Bowie wasn't nearly as old and no one knew he had cancer. He also just released an album.
Brian was demented and inactive.

Maybe it's just cope, but the LA protests seem to be taking the spotlight away. Even VDP seems to be posting more about LA than Brian. Politics seem to be burying everything. I feel like even Sly didn't get his just deserts either.

>>126694934
This too. Brian hasn't really been active in awhile. 2004 or 2011 seems like the last time he was REALLY in the headlines. Had he died in the 90s/2000s we would've gotten the appropriate fanfare.

Bowie was a larger than life rock god, model, movie star, and sex icon, you couldn’t NOT know who he was even if you never listened to his music. Brian Wilson is revered by music nerds but many people who would say they like The Beach Boys probably don’t even know his name, or they might know him as someone who wrote a classic album and then became an insane recluse.

Bowie was a ubiquitous icon for 45+ years at the time of his death, relatively young and had just released one of the finest albums of his career. No offense to Brian, but he hadn't done anything of note since his solo version of Smile 20 years ago, had artistically, culturally and commercially peaked 60 years ago and was known to be in declining health since he had to retire touring. He, unlike Bowie, also lived well past the average life expectancy.

His later career would have been better if his wife Melinda didn't terminate his relationship with Andy Paley (who went to go on to do music for SpongeBob) and doom him to making basically adult contemporary music. When he bounced back with Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE and Lucky Old Sun, there was hope, but then the cowriter got charged with raping someone. After that, back to mostly soulless trash.

If he’d died the recluse who went insane because of smile, and never had a chance to finish it, his death would have been a huge deal. He got the chance to redeem himself plus another 20 years to live in peace. Hard to be sad about that.

How is this a question? Most people don't even know who Brian Wilson is. He wasn't a solo artist, the Beach Boys aren't even particularly popular (now). There's no cult of personality surrounding him. I told my parents, who both like the Beach Boys, that he died yesterday, and their immediate response was "Who's that?"You've been on mu too long

I think they tried to stay 'with it' for a good while in the late 60s and 70s, but perhaps the band name itself was just too intrinsically tied to their early surf & cars & girls themes. And this was made worse when Capitol pumped out greatest hits records, which sold far better than new BBs albums but helped cement them as a nostalgia act.
