Sunshine, Lollipops, and Rainbows: The Best of Lesley Gore [Rhino Legacy, 1998]
depressingly boy-identified for a proto-feminist icon ("Judy's Turn To Cry", "She's a Fool") *

all the same "You Don't Own Me" got widely taken as a feminist anthem instead of the teen angst song it actually was

From Norm N. Nite's "Rock 'n Roll"--he apparently neglected to mention her real name.
>Lesley Gore
>Born: May 2, 1946
>Home: Teaneck, New Jersey

>Lesley became interested in singing as a youngster when her cousin Alan introduced her to his jazz record collection. Her favorites were June Christy, Chris Connor, and Anita O'Day. In early 1963, while a senior in high school, Lesley was heard singing in her cousin's band by Quincy Jones of Mercury Records. She was signed to the label. A few months later, while Lesley and Quincy were going over some demo records, they found a song that seemed right for her. They recorded it and released it in April 1963 and in a short time "It's My Party" became a number one national hit.

>After a string of hits with Quincy Jones as her producer, she left Mercury in late 1967. She signed with Bob Crewe in 1968 after he started his own label. In 1971 she began writing her own material and a year later she signed with Mowest Records, a division of Motown Records. She released her first album with them in August 1972.

>Today Lesley lives in Los Angeles and still records for Mowest and makes occasional concert appearances.

I bet Christgau would consider that a strike against her since her favorite jazz singers were white.

Her father was some Jew textile magnate in NYC. AFAIK his firm specialized in children's undergarments. Although I'd have to wonder how one gets into that business. How do you go to investors and say "yeah I need venture capital to start a company that makes kids' underwear" and not get on a government watchlist? Yeah I know it was a different time, but...

Gore had 17 Billboard hits in total yet most of them seemingly disappeared from airplay outside the eternal It's My Party. Once in a while you hear Judy's Turn To Cry and You Don't Own Me but that's it and most people know Sunshine, Lollipops thanks to the Simpsons.

Did she get a sticky when she died? I don't recall there being one.
