What do we think of this album? I’m a huge Brian Wilson and Randy Newman fan and also love the Ys album that he produced for Joanna Newsom but I find it hard to connect with this one. On paper I should love it but there’s not a lot of poppy hooks to latch onto.

it's just dick van dyke showing off for 40 minutes, you're not missing much. warner bros lost their faith in him after they heard it and they're argument was literally about how there was no hooks.
parks needed brian to make anything remotely catchy

I didn't like Pet Sounds, so I'm not going to listen to this. I'm just not going to. Sorry.

It's been about ten years since I first heard it. I think Van Dyke's vocals ruin it. They didn't record them right, his voice sounds too echo-ey, if that makes sense. They're also mixed terribly; his singing doesn't blend seamlessly with the music, like the way the Beach Boys vocals do on Pet Sounds. Parks is kind of an awkward singer too, one that's trying to sing songs that already are not easy to sing. It just didn't work.

It has moments of brilliance, like >>126709468, but I get tired of Song Cycle by side 2.

He's a bad vocalist, a bad musician, a bad lyricist, a bad songwriter, and it's a bad album. No idea what Brian Wilson saw in this hack.

For nearly 60 years he's had people convinced he's some kind of genius elevated pop artist. He's a fraud and a hack, and there's a reason only hardcore Beach Boys fans and pretentious music journalists even know who he is.

tldr it's not you, it sucks

Him and Joanna Newsom, sure to be a winning combination. Not.

Jump! [Warner Bros., 1984]
Parks is a naughty choirboy and Kathy Dalton is auditioning for the Broadway lead, but theatrical preciosity is all you can expect from a musical comedy concept album anyway. What you don't expect from musical comedy is exotic Americana like Parks's irrepressible arty vernacular verbal and musical puns, which combined with his rich melodies compensate for the annoyances. B+
