Isn't it strange that mainstream media completely discredited mariah carey legacy?
Even Jennifer Lopez is more respected than her.

I used to think she was the ultimate singer as a kid (thanks American Idol, X-Factor, etc). In retrospect, I now laugh when I look at her live performances. Her tone is cool, but her delivery is so ridiculous, over the top showboating.

Sure she's insufferable, but so were plenty of other stars and we still talk about them. I think it's actually the fact that her biggest hit is a corny sleigh-bell driven 60s pastiche that we don't listen to at all for 11 months and then suddenly hear every single day until we wish we were dead. The fact that she's hands down the greatest singer of all time and Always Be My Baby is a perfect pop song doesn't even seem to matter because of that fucking Christmas song.

this is why she isn't sitting on legacy yet imo
maybe if she would've just quit, the same thing has happened to madonna, more people rn remember their fall and later lackluster releases than people remember their peak. hard to leave a legacy as a female performer unless they were the face of a huge cultural shift like madonna or britney. i mean we don't talk about donna summer or barbra streisand, diana ross, olivia newton john, linda ronstadt, cher, TLC. All giant acts, all borderline memory holed and more remembered for their cult of personality than their music. even adele, and she's not even old yet, who talks about adele? i wonder how many people here could even name all of these, and then how many of those could name a song or two from each

Sum Jack Jones. This isn't too bad and it's tasteful but the format lends itself to a lot of schlock.

Wild thing to say desu
I'm not nuts about Mariahs ballads even if they were some of the better ones but Ariana doesn't have a single song on par with Emotions, Fantasy, Dreamlover, or even All I want for Christmas

Brother the only act in the world that has more no.1 singles than Mariah is The Beatles, and it's only one more. The next in line has five less. This was also when there were a lot more mainstream artists to contend with. Even her ballads are some of the best ballads out there.

Ariana sounds incredibly sluggish and doped up on antidepressants most of the time. Of course I don't blame her given that Nickelodeon suits ran a train on her when she was 14 and she probably wishes she was dead ever since.

in all fairness she had a major lack of competition because the 90s was really short on pop stars it was a very rock/album-oriented decade

nta, agreed it lends itself to a lot of schlock but the fact remains that it's way harder to get a huge hit with a ballad, it's got to be flawless at what it's going for and compete with all the toetapper shit that people just instantly like. there are reasons people struggle to break through with ballads now, takes a lot more patience

Getting a hit is not a problem it's making one that will be remembered once it falls off the charts. Pop music history is filled with thousands of shitty ballads that charted but nobody remembers anymore.

Mariah Carey [Columbia, 1990]
I swear I didn't know her mama was an opera singer but then I'm embarrassed I didn't guess. She gets too political in her brave young attack on war and destitution ("There's gotta be a way/To unite this human race/And together we'll bring about a change.") Elsewhere she sticks to what she doesn't know--love. Debbie Gibson come back, all is forgiven. C

She regularly just knocked huge acts out of the running even if they just got there, and then would hold onto that spot for weeks. That song she did with Boyz II Men was no.1 for 16 weeks, the longest running no.1 in history until Despacito. 23 years. You don't have to like her more to admit that she was more successful and had better songs. Ariana isn't even out of the game and a lot of people can't name a single song, or just one or two. Her shit is really inconsistent, no classics, star power and gossip precedes her music and drives her sales. She's incredibly talented imo but just hasn't had the songs to make her a classic. They very rarely broke out of her targeted demographic, and even when they have it's been due to celebrity drama, not the actual music breaking through

Most of these were 80s giants whose star fell off in the early 90s and only Celine arguably was a dominating pop star for the entire decade.

anything that lets them keep believing that the shit going on in their bubble when they came of age was the best of the best, most relevant things have ever been. most people do that though, it's pretty natural desu
the world is way more interesting and exciting when you can back up from your own experiences and perspective though, and you get to avoid a lot of struggles with aging that most people have. the people that post shit like that are the same people that will be in here in five years arguing that their (now)old favorites were way bigger, better, and more important than whatever future stars people will be gushing over

This is a great little reference book for 50s-early 60s muzic and you would be floored at all the literallywhos, one hit wonders, and hit factories that are now totally forgotten because their songs were product that aged like old milk.

I purposely only listed her competition for her earliest albums. They all had no.1 hits when Mariah was releasing her first few albums, and what you said isn't true for all of them either. Artists that got more no.1s in a few years than a lot of mainstream acts got in their entire careers are obviously not pushovers. Stop trying to change the parameters of success to better fit your feelings.
She continued getting no. 1s up through 2005. Not including her big Christmas song. Are you going to tell me she had no competition up through the late 90's through to 2005? During and after the teen pop explosion? Were those no. 1s just flukes also, when the pop game had taken over and she was older than the lot of them? And if all of her hits were flukes, why are so many of her songs still well known and considered classics?
I wanted to just let you have it, but the idea that she didn't have competition because genre was more varied when she came out is absurd to begin with, because so did everyone else, and the pop game was still dominated by a handful of artists just like it is now, and has been for as long as I've been alive, but they had other types of music to contend with at the same time. For the last decade+, until very recently it had just two genres as real contenders, so it's actually been easier. Hip hop is falling off as country is taking over anyway, so it's still more favorable for mainstream acts. A lot of pop artists now just straight up time their releases for the charts too. That wasn't such common practice until after 1996, after the telecommunications act allowed for labels to have much more foresight and control over what charted.
