Black Monk Time is immortal.
Best song? Obviously it’s “I Hate You”.

they were basically isolated from what was going on in the US/UK at the time, and forced by playing live in rowdy German clubs to go harder and faster

How did a bunch of GI get funds to create a full record under a decent label?

I remember reading some West German existentialist nihilist artist guy basically fell in love with them and their sound and thought they were the "anti-Beatles" so he bankrolled them

No they didn't dude. What happened with the Monks is they were stationed in Germany, and some art school kids there had this idea of taking this rudimentary rock band and turning them into a some kind of proto-Velvet Underground performance art thing. They discovered the noise and feedback stuff on their own, but the tonsures and outfit was all done by these art school manager kids, the whole aesthetic and rawness and confrontational sound was being pushed by these guys. They did that one album and obviously it didn't go anywhere, when psych happened in 67 they decided to jump ship and get commercial but that didn't work and they broke off. They would have probably done alright if they went back to the States.

I think the lead singer guy ended up becoming the mayor of a small town in the mid west sometime in the 80s or 90s

This is unironically the hardest and most based protest song of the 60s, still holds true today:

Some of it sounds a little beatnik-ish. Some of it sounds like what The Doors were doing. Which if you consider Jim Morrison's father was the Admiral of the ship involved in the Gulf of Tonkin. It seems the handlers may have been a little more glow in the dark than >>126724689 is suggesting.
Kind of a German section of the Laurel Canyon culture creation project that got scrapped for whatever reason.
Elvis got hooked on amphetamines in the Army while stationed in Germany.
If you were just a hepcat/rockabilly dude blasted out on govt. issued speed/LSD/who knows?, then maybe this is what you would come up with.
Ironically Elvis started his Gospel era in Germany.

He wasnt. There were two ships involved and he wasnt in either. He was stationed far outside the zone.

Crazy how they were essentially The Beatles of South America for a year in the mid 60s. Even had their own TV show in Peru
