Voices from Within edition
A thread for extreme, abrasive, technical, progressive, or experimental music under the rock umbrella. This includes metal, hardcore, experimental rock, noise rock, and others. Music that is mainstream, "alternative", novelty-driven, "proggy" but not progressive, or not rock music in any sense, is discouraged.
>Is [genre/band/album] fit for /xxr/?
Maybe not. Put away your personal love of that music and look at it objectively.

This OP has gotten ridiculous mate.
>"proggy" but not progressive
The fuck does that mean? And why is mainstream shit discouraged when in reality it's still a discussion? I thought this was just a rat free /metal/ alternative with broader scope to stop "not metal" shitposts for every album posted.

>The fuck does that mean?
Music that mimics early prog music without attempting any advancement of the artist's expression or the genre's limits, and so REGRESSES into prawg quotation, imitation, and masturbation. Think Absolute Elsewhere, the worst of Psychic Secretions, and much of Dream Theater.
Since /prog/ exists, and /metal/ persists despite its necrosis, then regressive prog rock/metal has one, if not two places to go. /xxr/ should not be the third.
>And why is mainstream shit discouraged when in reality it's still a discussion?
Why is it discouraged in the extreme/experimental rock thread? Are you serious? What does "still a discussion" mean or do to excuse anything?
I want to set higher standards for anons and myself. I love mainstream rock and heavy metal, but this can't just be the "shit I like" general. Heavy metal is, broadly, not extreme nor experimental.
>I thought this was just a rat free /metal/ alternative with broader scope...
Generally, yes...
>...to stop "not metal" shitposts for every album posted.
That's a benefit, but you projected what you wanted onto what I made and assumed you knew everything I was thinking.
To make a general that might live beyond the initial purpose of a metalhead's refuge from schizos, I changed the scope from metal (which could mean Deep Purple or Deathspell Omega) to E/ER. This shifts it away from an aesthetic classification, closer to a collection of common musical aspirations.

>Why is it discouraged in the extreme/experimental rock thread? Are you serious? What does "still a discussion" mean or do to excuse anything?
I guess a lot of this boils down to me thinking about what you meant and us having different meanings. Like I'd say early metallica is "extreme metal" just from the classification that usually gets thrown about with, but it's mainstream.
That and to me "mainstream" just means "the classics".

I guess this is the nature of you wanting a metal2 thread but having to distinguish it into its own niche to avoid being marked as adupe, which is totally fair.

>Solid but pretty standard for stoner metal at this point. Once you get used to the style it becomes less exciting over time. It's hard not to bring up Mastodon cause the band sounds a lot like them.
Sounds like prawg/heavy metal that's not fit here.
>>126732511
Personally, the only album here I have listened to and don't like is Blizzard of Oz. Hard pop rock, very little heavy metal, cheap neoclassicalisms.
I think there's room here to love early heavy metal for its generative qualities and influence on extreme metal. But yes, I think heavy metal in itself doesn't fit, unless some seriously genre-pushing album comes about.

Weak on riffs in a metal sense, and the breakdowns aren't simple chug patterns meant to release tension. The riffs are often interstitial, and the breakdowns are too frequent and rhythmically skewed.
What HLB do instead is pursue a crushing and alien atmosphere, and they are good at painting their machinic apocalypse. Beyond the unusual core/djent chugs, the use of pick scrapes and other discordant and unmusical guitar sounds is pretty cool. Their technical display doesn't feel like its all flexing and no purpose.
A couple cringe attempts to fit in catchy a vocal hook get in the way of their focus on mood, a behavior that also appears on Vรคlde, but they're minimal.
I don't think this will change the minds of metalheads on djent/thall or deathcore, nor does it have to, but I think this stranger wing and overlap of the two is worth checking in on occasionally.

They're too energetic and not psychedelic enough for me to personally tag them as stoner, but I totally see why other people would. Progressive stoner sludge? Sure.

>Q: Ehnahre is on an edge โ€“ between primitivism and detailed intellectual well-thought artistic conception or so I think. Where do you see yourself in such creative aspects? Which of both aspects is closer to you?
>A: I like to think of Ehnahre as sitting right on the edge between both worlds. We write music that is very detailed and complex and extremely difficult and academic. But those things are used to create furious, dark, ugly music. I like to call it a โ€œcalculated insanityโ€.

>Q: How do you explain that your music has always been affiliated with โ€œmetalโ€ when since the beginning, we cannot say that it is strictly speaking?
>Iskandar Hasnaoui: Our music is aimed at all those who are not afraid of violence, darkness, or complexity: and there is a part of the metal public whose tastes meet these criteria.

>Q: The main aspect with this part is that it doesnโ€™t repeat itself, which basically goes for more or less all parts on the album. Why do you write your music following a line instead of going back and forth, like most bands do?
>Hasjarl: We went from being obsessed with black metal to contemporary classical music because it was primarily a path based on spiritual criteria [...] Wouldnโ€™t the better angle to your question be: why do so many bands follow established rules or abide by patterns that have been established by others? Thereโ€™s so many ways to structure an idea, a song, to express a dynamic, to evoke emotions. Every artist is a demiurge in his field of work โ€“ it is a tragedy when only a minority chooses to seize that opportunity. The key to understanding the structures within Fas is to keep thinking in terms of contemporary classical music. Revisited with our capabilities of course, and within a very specific, narrow context. [...] What Iโ€™m trying to convey is that Fas would not exist without Penderecki and Wyschnegradsky. Thatโ€™s what unlocked these musical territories for us, territories Bataille would call le trouble.

Thanks to the /meal/ anon who referenced this band. Death metal that's microtonal (16-TET) without constantly reminding you of its own conceit. Guitars are low and muddy, yet you can still at times notice the bass. Pulls from several DM strains ranging from death-doom, Soulside Journey, Human-era Death, Immolation, among others.

If you mean the Human comparison, I just noticed a couple things that reminded me of it. Moments like the soloing 40 seconds into Material Identity is shreddy and spacious like Human or ITP, while still having melodic direction, and sounding alien and twisted in a way any great death metal album benefits from.

What am I saying exactly? I won't dilute myself beyond recognition, but I'd like to be personable and share what I think about music without making myself the center of attention. I get wordy when passion strikes or if I just want to be specific about something. Sorry if that results in unhelpful waxing.
>>126779247
Agreed. 4chan boards shouldn't be entirely serious and dry, but sometimes the /mu/ catalog hurts to look at. Tweet-tier posts, coffeeposts, literal Twitter screencaps, politics bait, and the rampant poptimism on the board once known for sharing music beyond the mainstream in one way or another.
I hoped /metal/ would stand above that, but on many days it suffers similar problems as /mu/ plus its own problems. That trapped in a corner feeling pressed me to find new options. I still have great fondness for /metal/, but sometimes its lucid moments are brief, and delirious episodes long.

Motionless in White is one of those bands I want to like more than I actually do. I get the appealโ€”the theatrics, the image, the big choruses with just enough edge to feel โ€œmetalโ€ without actually challenging anyone. But every time I give them another shot, I hit the same wall: it all feels like a performance of heaviness rather than anything that actually means something. Like, theyโ€™re trying so hard to be dark and transgressive that it ends up weirdly sterile.

They borrow the aesthetics of heavier genresโ€”industrial, goth, metalcoreโ€”but none of it really sticks in a meaningful way. Itโ€™s just stitched together in a way that makes me think of a mannequin in corpse paint. There's nothing wrong with liking them, but I wouldn't hold them up as anything more than introductory-level heavy music. They're like training wheels with spikes on them.

That said, if you like them and they hit something emotionally for you, cool. Iโ€™ve just been burned too many times by bands that look interesting on the surface but feel hollow underneath. MIW fits that mold for me. I guess Iโ€™m just tired of stuff that sounds extreme but doesnโ€™t feel like anything.

Recommended listening. Anti-prawg progressive metal by the Scale It Back guy. Very alienating. The song structure is mazelike, riffs have a strange rhythm to them and bounce off the walls without being spastic, and the production underlines the alienation with drum programming and vocoded vocals. The overall mood is synthetic yet not mechanical. Definitely not the "sick riffs" kind of metal, but it's a successful realization of the idea, and I enjoy listening to it each time.

As for last night's fishing for an epic melterino, I'm not biting. The drama clique side of /metal/ will say I have a big ego, yet all they want to do is feed it. They say this general will never last, and yet they'll post off-topic shit just to bump the thread. Either quit it or admit it.
I really don't want to be the next Hector, but if cliquers want to give me the spotlight, at least I can use it to highlight cool music, so people who can tune out your noise can enjoy it.

Listened. There are rock instruments and I suppose rock influence, but it's a stretch to call this rock.
This work tries to tell a narrative through the language of minimalism (drone-like modern classical music achieved through a repetitive yet slowly changing process, akin to gears turning), but each time a movement builds momentum through minimalism's slow-rolling process, it jumps from to the next movement, killing the momentum and not tying them together. It fails as minimalism, and fails as a narrative composition. The technique is not up to the task.
