There was a book a few years ago that had a new story of his death. But it was still from drugs just that he took them in a club in Paris instead of his room. He died in the clubs toilet and the owners seeking to avoid publicity moved his body back to his room and told his girlfriend to delay calling the police for a few hours. But since the french chose not to do an autopsy nobody will be able to prove conclusively he died from drugs but since he was known to be taking opioids and his girlfriend OD like a year later it seems pretty likely. The question is did he want to die ? I believe he was still facing charges in Florida I think and he was probably scared of being sent to prison if he returned to the US.

He definitely died in the bathroom stall of the Rock n Roll Circus club and was moved to his hotel room. May have been opiates, may have been other shit. Drinking as much as he did, it wouldn’t take much to depress his breathing enough to kill him. Any number of softer drugs could have done it. Although bathroom stalls do give off the shooting up impression.

I don’t think he so much wanted to die as he didn’t care much whether he lived or not. He wouldn’t have gone to jail, but he was definitely fucked up mentally from the backlash of that incident. Plus he was going back to being fat like he had been his whole life until 1966.

The drugs and alcohol hid it, but underneath, he had low self esteem and cared way too much about what other people thought of him.

I tried reading Ray's biography and it was just a bunch of rambling nonsense and tall tales. Also the way he spoke about Morrison in the book was extremely homoerotic. Sounded like some seriously repressed homolust. Really shocked me since he's married and was supposedly raised catholic.
