>>126742617I spent a lot of time in Brooklyn in the late 2000s. It was universally known by everyone there that any white people living in neighborhoods like Bushwick or Bed-Stuy had their rent and utilities paid by their parents and were working part time for pocket money to spend on partying and going to shows. Even the whites didn’t deny it or try to hide it. Yes, a lot of them were still college students (almost entirely Liberal Arts), but the majority were dropouts or grads that just stayed for the scene.
But that culture was by no means unique to NYC. Places like Wicker Park (Chicago) and Silverlake (LA) were famous for also having major scenes as well. Any city of more than 250,000 was almost guaranteed to have an enclave.
That scene doesn’t exist anymore because housing costs are fucked to death (even in poor neighborhoods).
