Did Phil Spector really fuck it up?

No, he saved it. Glyn Johns had the right idea with the audio-verite approach but couldn't make it work as a listenable and commercial album after two failed attempts. Spector found the right balance between presenting the feel of a spontaneous, laid back jam session and a halfway cohesive collection of pop songs.

Spector's versions of the songs are much better than Martin's or Johns'. There's a reason why he's considered the greatest music producer of all time. As this anon says >>126746615, Spector salvaged the Get Back sessions, which were a total mess, even if the songs themselves were good.

I’d never understand the fascination for Let It Be Naked, it’s unlistenable. Spector overdubs made it significantly better, especially in The Long and Winding Road.

I actually prefer Johns' takes of the ballads over Spector's or even Naked's, but he couldn't get the rockers right. Spector hit the nail on the head there, and even Naked just followed his lead for the uptempo tracks for the most part.

I think The Long and Winding Road needed strings, but of the restrained George Martin variety. Something subtle yet powerful like Something. Spector went way overboard piling on layer after layer. But imo it's the only really bad one on the album. His embellishments on other tracks are more tasteful.

It goes back to the original argument over the dry-sounding British 63-64 sides and the reverby shit Dave Dexter put on the US versions.

I mean it's not like Dan Nigro will ever match up to him.

They're rough and loose but I like the sound. Long and Winding Road feels like Paul alone in a spotlight noodling to himself.

The track sequencing on Let It Be Naked is much, much better than the original, and including Don't Let Me Down is the cherry on top. Starting with Get Back and ending with Let It Be is clearly the superior choice.

The Long and Winding Road is the only one I really think is overproduced on the original. I like the naked version of that song much better, but the rest of the songs do tend to sound better in Spector's version.

Glyn Johns used mostly different (and inferior) takes of the songs for his version of the album. For instance, this was choice for I've Got A Feeling

Spector was still functional and relatively sane at this time it was shortly afterwards when drugs started chewing away at his brain.

He didn't even really produce ATMP because he was constantly fucked up. George mostly just did things they way he thought Spector would. So technically if you hate the sound of that album it's not entirely Phil's fault.

No. The material was weak to begin with and he did his best to salvage with what he had. A lot of people (especially Paul McCartney) complain about the overly lush production but the ones that are most apparent in that way are already cheesy songs so I think he deserves some forgiveness
