What is it about punk that attracts leftists and redditors more than any other genre?

the funny thing is punk was invented by guys who either became right wing or were right wing. the ramones, johnny rotten, iggy pop was pro reagan.

punk music was about trying to capture the energy of 50s rock music, not being political though.

but as someone said above, the barrier to entry is easy for leftoids to take over. just got to know three cords.

Nobody born after 1980 is a real "punk" because Punk was a very specific movement that only could've existed in the post-hippie 70s and 80s and everything beyond this are just posers, these aren't punks they're just neo-punks. The original punk movement included right-wing skinheads and militant leftist tankies because they both responded to hippies the same way, by accusing them of being toothless liberals. Punk cannot be a thing in todays political climate

>She had lived there for a couple of years and she became more and more racist and stereotyping people. And to be honest there was a lot of shock value intended in the lyrics. I wanted to show the dark side or underbelly of Los Angeles. People like Dashiell Hammett, James M. Cain, and Nathanael West did โ€” the Doors did it โ€” so it was time for an update.
He basically lays it out here that it was shock value, or pure aesthetics to conjure this underworld image. His touchstones are crime writers.

pretty accurate
punk is very often more about the message than the music and it always has been: it's rebellious to the point of rebelling against music
whether or not the artists in question are actually transgressive isn't relevant - they perceive themselves as peaching some sort of uncomfortable truth
which is also why most of it is complete shit

It's very welcoming. If you're a dysgenic loser you can put on the clothes and fit right in. Further, it's "righteous". If you're a dysgenic loser, you can put on the clothes, say x thing is bullshit, and fit right in. Lastly, it's contrarian. If you're a dysgenic loser, you can put on the clothes, say x thing is bullshit, don a smug sense of superiority over your peers and their mainstream tastes, and fit right in.

Most of this applies to emo as well but the emo kids at least understand their genre going mainstream was for the better.

What the fuck does this even mean? Anything can be "tangentially political." Merely alluding to the existence of social issues does not make a work of art expressly political. There is no expression of a political viewpoint in these songs.

I don't really mean to say all punks are losers but it's clear a large chunk of any audience will be people who are seeking acceptance, desperately. I've gone to plenty of punk shows and had fun, say in the pit, it's plenty energetic. But it seems inescapable that there will be some sort of "we are one big happy fambly" wholesome chungus element at play.

Ironically the real "punk" attitudes I've noticed are at shows where people smoke lots of weed, like white boy reggae. Those people are angry and will destroy your venue, the only thing keeping them mellow is their addiction to marijuana.

Then so is nearly every other popular genre of music still going today. There's been at least one great punk record every decade since its inception. The only thing that's graveyard dead is scenes. There is no punk scene, metal scene, nothing, just a bunch of faggots writing reviews for zero dollars on the internet.
>punk is leftist
Yes, ugly freaks always think claiming something means the issue is settled. And as always, there's nothing they can do when it does otherwise.

You sure moved those goalposts far, I can barely see them from here.
The point us that not every punk band was in lockstep with establishment left wing politics. That there were bands who eschewed left wing politics and embraced "chud" messaging or aesthetics either to be edgy or because they considered it more punk to piss off preachy left wing punks and the "Maximum Rocknroll" crowd.
A few I'm aware of: Ramones, Sex Pistols, Fear, Teenage Queers, The Exploited, Gang Green, The FU's, The Vandals, Vile, White Pride, Ism, Chronic Sick, VKTMS, Hypnotics, Iron Cross, Last Rights (as well as most bands frontman Jack Kelly aka "Choke" was involved with), Agnostic Front, Cro-Mags.

And while not expressed in their music or image, the Bad Brains tried to assault the frontman of the Big Boys for being homosexual. Literal gay-bashing was also said to be common in the New York scene, with bands like Cro-Mags and Agnostic Front accused of taking part in it.

So as others ITT have indicated, real life is shades of gray and to claim that punk was always strictly left wing is revisionist fiction. Especially when you had punk darlings like the Bad Brains that every punk band in America worshipped ranting about faggots and even getting violent about it. Punk was more diverse than modern punks want to admit.

I know people like to argue about which was the first "punk" band, but if you're going off the general consensus that it was the Ramones, the vast majority of their lyrics were either about being in love with girls or horror movies
I think Misfits were one of the few big punk bands that ended up sort of following in their footsteps. The idea that punk was specifically political in the UK was because the first wave of punk bands there mostly sang about politics. Of course, I'm one of those people who prefer the Buzzcocks and the Stranglers to the Clash/Sex Pistols

>Any proof Punks were against hippies?
Not saying all of them, but California Uber Alles by the Dead Kennedys was written because the frontman hated hippies about Jerry Brown, government of California
>After the song's initial release, mild confusion arose in the Bay Area music scene as to why Biafra (who was outspoken about his far-left political views) was targeting Jerry Brown (a notably liberal politician for the time). Brown succeeded Ronald Reagan as governor of California, and Reagan was a seemingly more obvious target. However, Biafra frequently expressed his disdain for hippies, and the Dead Kennedys often satirized both left-wing and right-wing politicians.

punk won in the end, it became the root of all popular music since 1980. any time you hear a Nickelback song, that came out of punk--just barking over 3 chord rock with no solos. hip-hop also owed its existence to punk since no actual music skill was needed there.

Punk was a movement of mostly middle-class teenagers, although it started with lower-class kids. It was all about debauchery, any politics were buried beneath drugs and promiscuity. Despite this being the view of scarymonger busybodies, they were right all along. You see most post-punk documentaries problematizing how punk's โ€œrevolutionโ€ never went anywhere, or if it even had a revolution in the first place. Others have the more romanticized idea that it was co-opted by corporations, but that's bullshit, since then the biggest genre act has been manufactured by a major label. I love punk, especially the American strain derived from LA, which is now known as hardcore punk. But everything about punk is overblown.

That's not to say that he was right wing or anything, but the reason he chose Brown instead of Reagen was the hippie thing. If you look at the lyrics of Holiday in Cambodia, it's also criticising young American leftists in college for trying to defend that regime
