Unless we're (pointlessly) naming 100% artificial entities such as boy bands, "industry plants" can only really be a thing in the post-dialup internet era, when so much emphasis is placed on the listener discovering something. Sure, bands had to pay their dues and prove themselves in a live setting or whatever, but getting your demo tape in the right hands or scoring an audition (which of course sounds ludicrous today) were pretty much the only ways to get anywhere. And the bigger the name the better your odds. Anyone determined to make a living as an artist cannot put all their chips on 'cred'; choosing not to chase influence is a luxury.

there are a lot of legit bands pre-internet that would've had a helping hand over others. Bon Jovi's close relative owned a popular recording studio, Slash's mom was a fashion designer who worked closely with famous celebrities, and Stewart Copeland's dad was CIA. They would've all gotten plant accusations if the internet was around then.

Peter Asher of Peter & Gordon was a rich doctor's son and got to have a music career solely because his sister was dating Paul McCartney. After the hits dried up he became the A&R man at Apple Records and discovered James Taylor, then made a bazillion dollars producing all of Linda Ronstadt's 70s albums.

who cares?

the whole sniveling about plants/nepo/privilege is so fucking stupid.

If the music is good, who cares if it's a plant?
If the music sucks, who cares if it's a plant?

there's literally no correlation between "being a plant" and "making good albums" so why the fuck is this on /mu/ instead of /pol/ or wherever insecure losers go to whine about "nepo"?

>if you want to go back to pre-rock singers Teresa Brewer could count as the Silent Generation Taylor Swift given that her mother groomed her for a music career from early childhood.
not the same thing. her father was a factory foreman in Toledo and she was doing local radio shows from childhood and grew from there into an adult singer. that was much more like Petula Clark who also came up in the same era on radio shows (the BBC in that case).

besides back in the 30s-40s that was common for singers to be discovered on local radio shows often when they were kids. that included Rosemary Clooney, Georgia Gibbs, and others. not comparable to Swift whose dad was a hedge fund manager who bought her a career, she grew up with a silver spoon in her mouth.

that was normal practice back then. you sang standards written by professional songwriters or else record labels had their own in-house songwriting teams.
