Total corporate product to sell fake rebellion to bored postward suburbanites and then he ended his days forced to sing Rick Rubin's favorite songs at gunpoint.

At San Quentin [Columbia, 1969]
Much weaker than Folsom Prison or Greatest Hits, which is where to start if you're just getting into Cash. Only ten songs, one of which is performed twice. The other was written by Bob Dylan. C+

One of my favorite artists. Deserves all the praise he gets. Also his movie is the best musicians biopic that will ever be filmed.

So what you look for in music is their looks? Are you unironically gay? Genuinely curious but i’ll admit he's handsome which practically everyone was back in those days before microplastics and all that yummy stuff.

I think he's saying that back at that time especially Dylan covers were a popular, lazy way to pad out an album when you didn't have enough original material.

Yes 100 percent, one of them. I grew up on him, my Paps would always play Cash. I think he has some of the best song ever written as well honestly. He isn't a good singer per say, but the emotion I hear carries the music. I don't know man, I just really really enjoy Johnny Cash.

Doesn't require explanation to be honest. Those who pretend not to understand why people enjoy one of the most popular, best selling, and widely regarded instances in a genre, and who has appealed to people who don't even like the genre, deserve no good faith responses. Why you like it on the most basic level requires no thought.

I don't speak for all of mu. I like Johnny Cash and think he is unambiguously important for country music, and popular music in general, for many reasons. It isn't complicated.

I understand, but I think it's pretty obvious that explaining why you don't like something on that order of popularity (which most things don't reach) makes more sense than having to explain why you do.

Okay but obviously it's just funny hyperbole. I think he should be given a pass for the Johnny Cash Show alone (which I suspect most people on this board have never seen or maybe even heard of), let alone his influence on genre.

Many reasons but especially for the priceless recordings of country and folk, and some rock stuff, old timers, very new stuff, etc., at the end of the 60s and opening of the 70s. Like Seeger's Rainbow Quest, though somewhat less important in terms of footage (which reminds me, you should watch Pete's interview with June Carter and Johnny, who is fucked up beyond belief on pills), it prioritized songs, having the guests also perform duets and well loved old songs after performance of their popular songs, etc. For me personally, it recorded some of the greatest of all time at their absolute peak, like Mickey Newbury.

A little overrated. Wrote 3 good songs, and covered 1. Carried by producers and session musicians most of the time. Very good singer, but im not interested in getting deeper into the music.
