Would it have been better and more influential than Sgt. Peppers?

Maybe. Heroes and Villains was a badly received single but ended up being a crowd favorite for their live shows in the 70's It is a lot weirder than SGT pepper and its more "traditional" songs on the album aren't exactly fun pop songs (Good Vibrations being the exception.) It would most likely have prevented the Beach Boys falling in popularity in the states a bit. Smilley Smile was the actual reason they started to flop as Pet Sounds did reach gold/had FOUR hit songs on it.

Pet Sounds being a flop at the time is a myth. Smile in its likely actualized 1967 version would have looked fairly similar to this.

the beatles won the music arms race. thats the end of the story. sure, maybe there is a reality where the beach boys or brian wilson outdid the beatles, but thats not the one we're living in

No. A very pretty sounding collection of miniatures in music. I think Brian Wilson or Van Dyke Parks said something to that effect when coming back to it. Pretty much sums it up. The "What if "aspect is what kept the mystique cooking before it was all re-released or re-assembled years later. It would have been nice for the audience to hear both albums, rather than having to put up with smiley smile

>Jellyfish
I was wondering why that name sounded vaguely familiar and I remembered this mv I used to watch back in the mid 2000s on YT. Never knew it was them.
