Unknown Pleasures is not debatable. Closer is a bad record (I know, filtered etc etc, but it's a shitty direction for the band and only 3 of the songs are worth any time - if Curtis didn't die I don't think it would be considered special).

It's 100% the photography. You perceive them as more effay because there's an "vintage, black and white, muh nostalgia" bonus. If say some generic twink faggot indie band such as black midi or black country new road dressed and styled like JD in that pic you would either be completely indifferent or call them gay tryhards

I'm sure you won't agree, but those three songs are
>A Means To An End
>Heart and Soul
>Twenty Four Hours
Those songs sound like Joy Division with a sometimes interesting development in the sound. The rest have at times interesting ideas in them but weren't there yet.

A lot of the problems with Closer is because Martin Hannet did a terrible job on the mix on those other songs. The Peel Session version of Colony actually sounds good for example.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66DAjsJy4bc&list=PLzlbAG6SqtkT70H9eWgIeexLOXbyBLq0I&index=8

Some of the other songs sound half baked though, and Love Will Tear us Apart is possibly the worst Joy Division song because it spams that one riff too much.

Yes I agree with you in part. Especially the first half of the album is really egregious. I don't know offhand if it's an error or intentional, but the sound doesn't work for me. Colony is, I agree, one of those songs with interesting ideas in it. I think a lot of those ideas show up again on New Order's first album, though, so it isn't fully a production problem. What wanted to be born was something like Dreams Never End, which to me was a big breath of air after Closer (not because it's catchy or easier to digest but because it's clearly a sound that wanted to come out).

A lot of the first half is like that, I think the songs aren't really very refined either but his mixing doesn't help at all.
The two Joy Division songs that ended up being recorded by New Order (ceremony and In a Lonely place) would have been two of the best had they been done for Closer

With all that said, Heart and Soul, 24 hours and Decades are great, lyrically too. The Eternal as well.

>New Order was so much better
Better how exactly? When they were doing the Joy Division sound, they were worse. When they were doing a different sound, there's no comparison available that isn't just circling around preference. The only thing that can be said is that they were more popular, but that gap may have (probably has) been bridged over time. New Order is a cool band but "New Order is better than Joy Division" is by now so fucking played out dude.

No doubt, but I think the ambient popularity of Joy Division has been growing much faster and New Order's has been declining. There's just a sexier story with Joy Division that has appealed to normies. I know of no New Order movie or desire to make one.
