Why do pop stars not just hire an IDM artist to produce their songs? It doesn't even have to be pic related, but most of these top-tier musicians understand electronic music, rhythm, effects etc to a much higher degree than any industry plant. And to make shit both creative and fun while accessible enough for the masses could prove an interesting challenge for these artists. Win-win.

He literally doesn't do that. He doesn't have to and it would make him cheap.

Even when companies come to him to do music for a commercial he just tells them he will do whatever he wants. Orange paid him fucking a quarter million pounds and he farted out some remix of something he already had ready to go.

pop star fans want catchy, simple stuff, and industry stuff prefers safe, mainstream hits. simple as

pop stars gotta stick to their image, and working with avant-garde producers messes that up. Itโ€™s extra work, and those weird, complex sounds don't fit the usual pop format for radio.

some artists like Bjรถrk or FKA twigs are have done it tho. i guess madonna did too, was it william orbit producing her stuff back in 97? not an IDM staple, but that was pushing it for mega pop star back then. don't expect a taylor-swiftt-autechre collaboration anytime soon.

I know this will piss some of you off but pop songs (for the most part) have just as complex production as IDM. Even shit like Britney Spears has a lot going on. Actually listen to Oops I Did It Again with good headphones and you'll quickly realize this.

No they don't, they all use the same basic-bitch Berklee rules which the Berklee School of Music just blatantly stole from the KLF.

Yeah, but it's produced to not sound challenging. Which is why OP's question is stupid: nobody listens to mainstream pop because they want to hear something like Aphex Twin.

Are you talking about only the production or songwriting as well?

Because pop is mainly melodic driven. Unfortunately I don't think anyone could hum a tune that Aphex Twin ever did lol

Swift is more singer-sognwriter pop-country style anyway, so it wouldn't be a match. But Ariana Grande or Lady Gaga though? Why not? Just for shits and giggles it'd be interesting. All of them are pro musicians so they would probably find a way to collaborate and make something decent. Contrary to fans on the internet caring about "purity" and "selling out" and other ridiculous things they are mature enough to just meet in the studio and make a song together.

I think you missed the second part of my post. If we assume AFX is more capable than pop music producers, then he could be able to make intricate electronic music that is accessible enough to be a pop music hit. And it's not like he's some underground avant-garde musician that nobody knows about anyway. He's a household name with millions of fans. Collaborating with a pop star wouldn't be "selling out", it'd be just something like Paul McCartney doing a song with Rihanna and Kanya (which happened btw) - somewhat surprising, but ultimately not shocking and within popular music domain.

What you describe already exists in some way, since long.

Take for example producers like Trent Reznor, Pet Shop Boys, William Orbit, Conny Plank or Pharrell Williams.
Or guys like Flood, Paul Kendall, Dave Ogilvie, Trevor Horn, who produced a lot of industry act's records. As "electronic wizards".

Most of the time even more so. OP is probably confusing songwriting and production.

Marilyn Manson was basically a goth pop star that Reznor took under his wing. Reznor probably looked at Manson as someone that he wasn't since he took that long break between The Downward Spiral and The Fragile at the height of his popularity
