>there was a new Mars Volta album this year
Did anyone even know this happened? Did anyone listen to it?

No I didn't know, though I never liked this band and haven't followed them. I don't know how they developed over time, but whatever this sound is seems to have very little relation to what I understood Mars Volta to be.

The last album was awful. Are they still doing pop shit?

I was distracted by new records from Ringo Starr and Mogwai. Dream Theater came out with a new one as well.

better than the last one and at least somewhat interesting in structure. not that it means much at this point.

Yes, but not as bad as the self-titled.

I listened to it a few days after it came out. It's fine. Pleasant enough but also pretty forgettable, a lot like the album before it.

I can't even imagine a person who's capable of caring about TMV past Bedlam

Yeah, my interest in them cratered after that shitshow. They did redeem themselves with the two much better albums after Bedlam, though.
