Many people I think do not know that Hamas was started as the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, an international organisation that is similar to the red cross, and they are moderately religious, but vilified and persecuted in the states where dictatorships are established because they primarily support the working class of those countries. In Algeria and Egypt for example they were hunted like communists were in europe during the interwar. They are a political organisation, but it was actually mossad who prompted the creation of a militant wing in Hamas (the al-Qassam brigades), to cause a split within Fatah. Of course, they eventually became independent of mossad and were incorporated into the struggle for Palestinian liberation, while actually Fatah ended up collaborating with the colonialists.
