not to the level of Sabbath, the only ones from that era that have some heavy metal songs other than them are Deep Purple

No, not remotely. And it came out over a year after cream and hendrix had recorded stuff that were much closer to 'heavy metal'.

Master of Reality [Warner Bros., 1971]
As an increasingly regretful spearhead of the great Grand Funk switch, in which critics redefined GFR as a 1971 good old-fashioned rock and roll band even though I've never met a critic (myself included) who actually played the records, I feel entitled to put this in its place. Grand Funk is like an American white blues band of three years ago--dull. Black Sabbath is English--dull and decadent. I don't care how many rebels and incipient groovies are buying. I don't even care if the band members believe in their own Christian/satanist/liberal murk. This is a dim-witted, amoral exploitation. C-

The Yardbirds- Stroll On (1966) and Blue Cheer - Summertime Blues (1968) already had some heavy riffage in the rhythm section.
But they still had some bluesy fillers.

Punk first came out with this idea of killing all the bluesy flourishing shit in rock. So they did mostly boneheaded riffage with some occasional Chuck Berry-style licks.

Basically what Sabbath did was slowed down punk. They took the heavy riffage part but played it at downtempo speed with ominous doomy vocals.

i wonder why there was such a huge gap between sabbath's s/t and sad wings of destiny in continuing heavy metal as a genre

likewise, why was there a gap between black sabbath's self-titled and whatever motorhead/venom made in terms of heaviness

Motorhead and venom are basically punk. Their sound directly derives from ramones, the cramps, the dictators, and garage rock in general. They were based on fast power chords and a danceable upbeat groove. Black sabbath were based on riffs, so not power chords but a catchy melodic idea based around a root note. The big evolution in metal came with early iron maiden, who took the riffs, solos, and long-winded strucure from sabbath and other proto-metal bands but removed the blues inspired aspect almost entirely.

I don't hear it. There's a good amount of crossover but the a lot Sabbath immediately sounded 'heavy' to me, even back in the day before I even really got into them I thought this.
