smile fans are really into gimmicks and quirkiness XD, they don't know anything about music and circlejerk the four OK tracks and barely talk about all the filler interludes.
pet sounds was at least finished

The Beach Boys Today!

On an objective level it's gotta be Pet Sounds. At least it was finished. Brian was too much of a schizo to finish Smile in the 60's. 40 years of mythmaking led us to believe that Smile would've been better than Sgt Pepper. There's truly no way to tell. Even having listened to all the recordings from the original sessions, it's impossible to see how it could have been a coherent record.

Keep in mind that I think the 2004 Smile is the best thing Brian put out as a solo artist.

Smile is a lot of fun but pet sounds has a clearer purpose. Heroes and villains is my favorite beach boys song but as an album there’s just too much going on.

One idea is finished and another isn't, and frankly Smile was never really going to be finished and never actually was. What's there is technically and conceptually more interesting than Pet Sounds, but it is what it is.

I will add that I think the nearly 5 min version of Heroes and Villains and Good Vibrations alone are worth whole discographies of some of the best bands, I think bests any of what the Beatles dreamt up or managed, and implies the "great American experiment" with music won - even if only in spirit. But at the same time, those two songs alone so obviously imply a peak that could never be summitted.

I didn’t think Pet Sounds was that great, the only amazing song was God Only Knows. Today! was better (but much less consistent).

Used to think Smile was miles better but the gimmick wore off a bit; it's a bit of a mess, and the mosaic-like song structures aren't ideal. Therefore, I think Pet Sounds is marginally better. Both are very nice overall but also massively overrated (just like any other "great" pop music).
