The Dark Side of the Moon is an okay album.

Maybe even slightly overrated.
Personally thinking, it gets too much praise from people just starting to widen their music taste horizons.

I'm not saying it's bad in any way. It's 100x better than anything mainstream I've heard in the past 5 or so years.
I just think that, for the time of release, and even a year before, there have been many different albums that have a better overall sound.
It was unique for the time, yeah, sure. I'll give it that.

But hell, 90% of it's appeal and "recommendation for others" is that it is 'better experienced while high'.
Which possibly immediately alienates most of the people who listen to music. Because not everyone uses drugs recreationally.

Foxtrot by Genesis, Can't Buy A Thrill and Led Zeppelin IV all released 1-2 years before this and yet you guys would still pick Dark Side of the Moon. There's better music out there.

Pink Floyd is explicitly psychedelic music written and performed by acid eaters during the 70's which is peak psychedelic drugs and music. To understand its reverence you have to give leeway to the historical context and its appeal in that context first and foremost. So "better experienced while high" generally can be a weak excuse because usually people only say that when they just like an album while high, but here, the intent of it makes that idea valid to consider, though far from the only reason to defend it.

That said it is still very deliberately thoughtful music, riding a line of 'some' (not a lot but still some) manner of progressive rock complexity and classic rock accessibility. Having the songs relate to each other in compositions maximizes the albums unifying form and concept, having the lyrics be reasonably well written thoughts on serious topics like time, mortality, war, greed, and insanity while being memorable in a way any person can latch on to their own line or verse to resonate with, and merging effective rock musical ideas with studio-as-instrument approach to make a musical piece that is still a high standard in analog recording and producing all contributes to justifying its high regard.

Its both an important album in the time it was released, and genially a perfectly or near-perfectly conceived musical statement where each piece fits exactly in where it needs to in order to fully actualize its depth and potential as a euphoric experience that we would call "good music".

It's good but it's kind of wild when you hear your next floyd album because the prog stuff on dark side is so watered down and accessible that you would never know they were as out there as on meddle or Adam heart mother. Still Dark Side flows incredibly possibly the most cohesive record they did

Definitely amazing for the time of release. And a great influence in all of rock music.
I appreciate that influence.

But calling it "the best [rock] album of all time" is pushing it.

Interesting choice I am not familiar with it. Is it just a favorite of yours that you think should be regarded that high, or is there something about it that you think it achieves, artistically or something like that, that you think gives it the right to be called the greatest?

I really recommend listening to it from start to finish. It really just explains itself when you hear it.

As for my explanation, it's the band's best work to mix the upcoming "poppy" electronic sound with their prog past to make one gigantic final orchestral beauty to make the listener just go "wow".

Sadly, not as much historical appreciation or influence for other artists, but it is definitely an amazing album.
Both then AND today.

It's either this or Foxtrot. Their SECOND best album (In my opinion).

You're the one who started in with "hurr durr Zep IV and Foxtrot but why do people pick DSotM"

Not once did anyone say that DSotM was better than any of those other records, they just said it was "one of the greatest rock albums of all time", and that OP is being a contrarian edgelord twatwaffle by giving DSotM the meh. that's it.

On the run is the most cookie-cutter electronic shit you could have made in the 70s. Any german band shits on that song.

This album sucks. Nobody actually listens to it. They get stoned and put it on as background noise. You can't engage with it at all. Bad for singing along to and absolutely can't dance to any of it. It's beyond obvious it's used by midwits to believe they are smarter than everybody else for 'getting' it, even though the entire album is a masturbatory act and there is nothing to 'get'. Real music is music that you can engage with. Everything else is dumbasses jacking themselves off for understanding music theory.

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an off-hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way
Tired of lying in the sunshine, staying home to watch the rain
And you are young and life is long, and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
Sun is the same, in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught, or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over, thought I'd something more to say

This is what I'm talking about. People think the music is good just because of the lyrics. The same lyrics they have to look up since you can't understand most of them. I want music, not poetry that is surrounded by terrible music. Especially not poetry that can't be undertood due to the stoned mumbling of a British man and shit music playing over it.
