yeah I'm surprised that the /pol/ tourist MAGA trash haven't made more pro-Sammy threads, what with him being such a vocal Trumper and stauch right-winger.

You're not wrong though, Sammy gave Van Halen 10 years they wouldn't have had with Dave. And the only reason it all fell apart was because of Ed's substance abuse problems.

Even Van Halen III with Gary Cherone could have been an amazing record if Ed's ego had let them pick a good producer. Glen Ballard (who produced the neo-DaveVH single "Me Wise Magic") would have been the perfect choice.

Music isn't just raw skills. That's one way to shine, but there's all kinds of ways. Especially for a frontman, where you are the "front" and need a bit of coolness or some act to keep everyone's attention.
If we insist on just the music alone in its best execution, AI will easily replace everyone.

>Hagar's performance at Farm Aid on September 17, 1985 was supposed to be the introduction of him as Van Halen's new frontman. Officially it was a Hagar solo set and the plan was for the band to join him onstage as they performed his hit "I Can't Drive 55." The performance went awry when Hagar, forgetting that he was on live TV and it wasn't a normal rock concert, exclaimed "This one's for all you tractor-driving motherfuckers out there!" The TV and radio feed were immediately cut off. Van Halen's performance before a crowd of 90,000 was well-received but went unseen by TV viewers.[2]

People don't appreciate how odd he was even for his time. Just that there's been so much since that he's relatively normal. His favorite color was pink, his hair flopped everywhere, he had the energetic dancing and stuttering vocal style. Little Richard was so out there that it's easy to see, but Elvis wasn't seen that much differently. Like the difference between Prince and MJ.

you're missing the point entirely. It was the chemistry between DLR and EVH which fueled the rocket that made Van Halen. The oil/water mix of EVH/DLR was lightening-in-the-bottle type stuff that changed rock music. Without DLR, there would be no Van Halen- he was the driving force early on. Both of them imploded on their own ego and it was a shame.

Once SlapHappySammy joined the angst was gone and it was more about aliens in love, being buddy/buddy doing the conga line around the stage. The music, while still decent at times, suffered in part do to Sammy's terrible lyrics.

no. The "chemistry" was between Ed, Dave, Mike and Al. You gotta have all four. No disrespect to Wolfie (who is a fine musician in his own right), but you're the one who brought up chemistry.

And the "reunion" album was pretty much reheated leftovers from the 70s that they never released back then. It was a joke, and you know it.

The music was written by EVH and the lyrics by DLR- they had a chemistry that couldnt be replicated by sammy and it showed.

welp OK to be fair though, even Sammy said that LRHRN was a cream job. In the end it was basically a studio album with crowd noise mixed in.

BUT you can go find videos of Sammy era and Dave era and there's just no comparison, Dave was a terrible, terrible singer. Sammy was OK at worst, and had, more often than not, moments of greatness.

I saw all 3 van halens (Dave, Sammy and Gary) live, Sammy era was musically the best live. Partied like crazy at Dave and Gary was competent.

The sham "reunion" shows with Dave only served to highlight just what a massively limited singer Dave was. Take away the acrobatics and you just have a dirty old man talking and gasping his way through the lyrics.

I wouldn't have gone to the very last tour if I hadn't gotten in for free.

I remember a concert review where they said Dave was rambling about "man, I was sure one good-looking nude motherfucker back in '82."

Michael Jackson's Bad sold half of Thriller. Does that mean it was evidence of a huge drop? It's obviously a misleading statistic. Any band's top selling album will always have a big drop for the next one.

DLR is not only on another level above Hagar but he is insanely more talented than most rock singers at all. Also Eddie wrote all his best songs before hagar joined

How bout the 2nd highest range in rock music and a style of singing where he hit notes nobody else could. Hagar played DLR songs but the reverse never happened

Hagar was a much better singer than DLR, sure, but he wasn't half the character and he didn't have the songwriting chemistry with Eddie that Dave did.

Neither Van Hagar or Roth's solo stuff were a patch on Van Halen's original run.

There wasn't any beef between Cherone and Ed, he's actually one of the very few people the brothers didn't talk shit about in the years following.

He was a good singer with no ego who could actually do credible versions of both eras, but yeah, his Mick Jagger/Prince frontman style is pretty embarrassing. It's even worse now since he's like 60 and still does it - I saw Extreme with Mr. Big a few years ago and they were great but he was just ridiculous to watch.

People shit on Hagar was commercializing the band or whatever, but that's exactly what the brothers wanted. Look at the singers they were considering before they got Hagar - Daryl Hall, Patty Smyth, Jimmy Barnes and Eric Martin. They were very intentionally pulling from the pop and AOR world.

true, but my other point was that the band was getting older and they'd have a huge drop-off anyways even if Dave was still there. At best the sales would be marginally better than Sammy.

Its not so much being pop or commercial as they were both already; Jamie's cryin', Feel Your Love, Dance the night away- Jump being #1 etc...all great pop songs and the pop sensibilities of the harmonies with Mike. It was more about fully embracing the keyboards and then using said keyboards to play really, really sappy songs. It wasnt that they were pop, its that the sucked hard in comparision what people expected from VH. Most of that is on EVH but Sammy didnt help with innane lyrics and didnt have the wit or intelligence to make the songs less sucky.
