A lot of people don't know this, but "With or Without You" is about a prostitute that Bono had a relationship with at the time. "Aye, she was a lass I was fucking in between tours," said Bono in an interview with Stereogum, "hence the title of the song, I could not live without sticking my Irish sausage in her, but at the same time, I could not live with her since I was a married man and she was a whore". Other lyrics in the song also point to this. "See the thorn twist in your side" refers to anal sex, the thorn being Bono's penis. "Sleight of hand and twist of fate" refers to a handjob/masturbation and the following climax. "On a bed of nails she makes me wait" Bono had some weirdo BSDM fetish since at the time he was suffering from erectile dysfunction. "And you give yourself away" need I say more? It's obvious this is referring to her trade of prostitution and that she routinely had sex with men other than Bono. Truly an emotional masterpiece of a song.
