He was right about traditional pop and showtunes being good as hell

Seth is pretty good. He has a decent singing voice. He's one of the few people in Hollywood I really have respect for

I don't like showtunes that are overly talky, but working backwards from jazz gave me great appreciation for the GAS and trad pop

A lot of people (maybe understandably) hate Shrimp Boats and also blame Mitch Miller for it although actually he did not directly work with Jo Stafford as she was based out in LA.

she didn't really produce much schlock material by the usual standards of the 50s she was quite blameless in that

Mitch mostly ran CBS's New York studio he wasn't involved with the LA studio. I'm fairly sure that Stafford and her husband mostly self-produced their records.

He seems like an alright guy despite the atheism. He is a wonderful singer despite me not really giving a shit about the material.

Family Guy got me into old musicals and tons of good singer/songwriters from the 80s-2000s

That's how Mitch was the first to get in on the folk revival gold rush in greenwich village. He would've be a 49er but Goodnight Irene was in 1950.

>While Stafford herself was born and raised in California her family had migrated there from Tennessee and her two (significantly older) sisters Christine and Pauline were born there. She was classically trained as a singer and would have done opera but the Great Depression came and her parents could not afford to continue sending her to music lessons. The Stafford sisters formed a singing trio that performed country songs on Los Angeles area radio broadcasts but broke up in 1937 after Christine and Pauline got married.

>She then became a member of the Pied Pipers and married one of its members, John Huddleston. The group had success for a while but several members left to take 9 to 5 jobs and the remaining ones couldn't make on their own. They were tapped by Tommy Dorsey arrangers Paul Weston and Axel Stordahl to come to New York City. Dorsey originally planned to use Stafford as his sole girl singer but eventually also brought in Connie Haines to do fast songs while Stafford chiefly performed ballads. Haines departed in early 1942 which left Stafford the group's sole female singer.
