I don't know if any artist in history has ever been as locked in as these guys were.

It's not even worth debating because all six of their albums from 1970-75 are masterworks. That's what I mean by locked in

those were pretty good. Most of Dio's solo albums dont measure up.

Dio's sabbath albums have some pretty good stuff as well, but its more uneven I guess.
Heaven & hell. Children of the sea. Sign of the southern cross.

give Vol. 4 Master of Reality's production and remove a couple dud tracks and it would be considered right up there next to it

I've listened to the first 6 Sabbath albums but I have no clue about the post-Ozzy material

What's actually worth listening to? Or did they shoot their load on the first 6 and just produce slop afterwards

With Dio they became a typical 80s metal band. Predictable riffs, drum machine like beats. None of the creative syncopations and swing you got from Ward-Butler in the 70s. Maybe getting consistently blown away by Van Halen opening for them on that Ozzy tour according to the legend got into their heads. I have to say however "Neon Knights" was a hell of a kickoff track to that era.

Every Sabbath album is worth listening to. If you want the essentials check out Heaven & Hell, Mob Rules, Born Again, Headless Cross, Dehumanizer in that order. Also listen to Never Say Die it's got lot of killer tracks. Don't expect more of the sound from the first 6 from any of these.

I think black sabbath is the most universally beloved band ever. Maybe not the most popular, but they have almost no haters

I just could never get into Dios voice. Technically speaking its good, it just doesn't sound good to my ears.

I don't get the hate for Born Again. Conversely, I find the riffs on the Tony Martin era stuff lacking.

I read his review. He just compared them to grand funk railroad and then ranted about grand funk railroad instead of reviewing the fucking album. Biggest hack of all time
