1970 - Randy Holden - Keeper of My Flame
Randy Holden is the great lost metal pioneer. He played in several bands throughout the 60s, including Blue Cheer, but set out on his own in 1969. By 1970, his solo album was complete, but a series of setbacks kept it from being released. He quit music and didn't reemerge until the 90s. His music represents an unexplored strain of heaviness clearly crafted from the same stardust as Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, but going in a different direction.

1972 - Highway Robbery - Fifteen
Brutal, stupid buttrock from 1972. Definitely the heaviest song the band wrote, from their only release.

1972 - Night Sun - Living With the Dying
Very, very heavy krautrock from 1972. Much heavier and more ominous than a lot of their contemporaries.

1973 - Pentagram - Frustration
Everyone here is probably familiar with Pentagram's 80s output. They recorded hundreds of demos and live performances in the 70s, with many of the songs being rerecorded in the future. This song was rerecorded for the 1994 album Be Forewarned.

1976 - Overload - Survivor
A cover of prog rock band Homer's survivor, which isn't nearly heavy. There was a small scene of extremely heavy bands from San Antonio, Texas at the time that seemed to be several years ahead of the curve.

1976 - Ultra - Mutants
Another band from San Antonio. Very heavy Thin Lizzy influences.

1978 - The Godz - Under the Table
Fun, trashy biker rock from Ohio. They had a brief flash of popularity in the late 70s, but faded into obscurity as harder and heavier bands emerged.
