a handful of critics decided to take this garbage and pretend they were in on some esoteric knowledge by praising it knowing no one would question it. the ruse confused countless others who pretend to 'get it'. nobody actually 'gets it' because there's nothing to 'get' but people don't want to appear dumb or filtered so they go along and pretend it's some masterpiece. it's really easy to pretend a pile of garbage is a masterpiece when every else is pretending as well. it's really easy to give a perfect score and have people agree with it when no one is able to tell what their actual feelings on it are.

Except music that gets insincere followers is stuff that's "fashionable" to listen to, not falsely sold as esoteric. The faggots who shilled The Strokes to the top of the US charts were just pretending and following along with what critics said. Far weirder and dumber and less accessible music than fucking Trout Mask has had followings. I don't get the appeal behind Throbbing Gristle and think they sound silly at their best but they built a following of diehards and a lot of way better bands site them as foundational.

it would also be a 10 because the people behind most media scoring systems expect you to be an adult that doesn't suffer from autism spectrum disorder and understands that different genres of media are judged within the context of their respective genre or role in the industry

Nothing "off-putting" to me about raw, rootsy blues rock composed and played in 4 dimensions, especially when it's been so influential on the artists I already love

Music critics do not actually 'like' music and they are the people responsible for catapulting this garbage because it makes them feel intelligent.

I'll give you an example of a similar phenomenon. Communists and other ideological fanatics (fascists, religious zealots, etc) often only like a piece of music if it's pushing a 'message' that they agree with. If it's any talentless idiot strumming an out of tune guitar and shouting about something to do with the working class then that will be promoted as 'good music' by the fanatical leftist because they don't give a fuck if it's good to listen to, they care about the ideology being pushed. Similarly if it's a fanatical right winger and it's some shitty song praising the Nazis, or a religious zealot and it's some shitty song praising their religion. You get the point.

Music critics are responsible for other nonsense too, like projecting their highschool emotional baggage onto all of music history. Examle, pretending that Lou Reed was one of the most important musicians who ever lived. To read these people you'd think that VU were the most popular band ever with every musician, they were not. They were well liked but so were other bands like The Doors.

The difference is that critics liked Lou Reed because he was a whiny dork who reminded them of themselves, meanwhile Jim Morrison was chad and that reminded them of the guy who from class who got the girl instead of them, so he had to be written out of history.

The funny thing is that retards think that this is "intellectual bullshit" liking this album. It's outsider art, the polar opposite of ivory tower nonsense. But I see why you're saying that, because ironically it's the ivory tower intellectuals that are promoting this album. Meanwhile, beefheart himself would be dismayed to see that perception of his art.
There clearly is something to "get." This is constructed music. It's not a retard banging on an out of tune guitar. There is melodies, lyrics, etc. It's all constructed in a certain way and is by no means arbitrary or random.
It's similar how people can't accept 20th century classical music or free jazz. If you don't get it, that's fine, but don't cope by claiming everyone else is just pretending to like it.

Agreed. Van Vliet's few talk show interviews are eye-opening. He's just kind of an odd guy. People who dislike his work tend to project this pretentious, post-modernist, almost beatnik personality onto him, when he's really just a strange, soft-spoken man who likes jazz, blues, and hobo songs.

No one is more pretentious than people lauding themselves in being "normal" and not "pseuds", deliberately and on purpose refusing to engage with something that's out there. Again, not talking about actual normalfags here, I'm talking to autist reject losers who desperately wish they were normalfags. These are the kind of people that on purpose only listen to what is perceived to be conventionally good, they often don't actually enjoy a lot of that "normal" music (or art in general) but keep pretending they do because they believe it will make them "normal".

It's literally just random for the sake of it. Barely music maybe.
>>126927404
Literally every other fucking song on this undeniably. Also Napoleon XIV,Certain Beatles Psych Albums,The VU,Ten Years After,Zappa, and Hendrix all having released prior to this coming out. It wasn't actually that influential either. But it's comforting to pretend it was important to the type of person who uses 4chan religiously. So that's more what it is. It makes furries and people in the anime community feel less like incredible insurmountable retards. Same reason they all pretend to "listen to jazz".
>>126927992
Agreed. Probably mostly being done for puszy at the time ngl. But there's no real clear influence there. It changed nothing other than other bad novelty music like Mr.Bungle and Primus.
>>126942414
It sounds like a retard having a fit. It sounds retarded in the most literal sense possible haha. I'm glad you think the Japanese girl with goth makeup at New England Comics likes you more for pretending to believe this though ig. They don't btw. Captain Beefheart is like people who "like" homestuck tier shit. Him and his band are widely forgotten in real life because they were bad. Most real music fans would in fact rather hear Hendrix,The VU,CAN,The Hollies,Napoleon XIV,The Kinks,Love,Amon Duul ii,or like Q65. The audience for Beefheart is mostly try hard overweight glompler type chick's and male retards you see wearing hentai mlp shirts and shit in public. It's like stuff that appeals to weird irony couples with sub average iqs that somehow convinced themselves they're better than everyone else is. But they'll ofc never have the awareness to see this. It "works" in the way homestuck "works" if you "understand the concept" but it's clearly janky thoughtless bullshit created by an abject retard. It's like makes sense lol.

The Rising Storm literally only formed to get pussy and sound 50× better than this. No other reason. Immediately broke up upon graduating and made truly timeless shit. Several bands this was true of or probably true of that I'd actually rate significantly higher.

A lot of Psychedelic Stuff was this and also just being played to be score drugs though so I wouldn't discount Zappa just for that. I love The Rising Storm especially were prettymuch exactly like that but also like The Index and Lemon Fog. A lot of super super amateur psych rock.

it's really not very interesting if you've heard virtually any music outside of 60s rock. i can't imagine how sheltered and myopic people must've been back then

What's inaccessible about music? You just sit there and listen to it. If you don't like it, that's your problem, not the music's.

That's true of Trout Mask too. That's literally all of these. True of CAN. True of The Monkees. True of The Beatles. Etc etc. While you're not exactly wrong it's hard to dock points when every single one of these bands was essentially trying to be that anyway. John Lennon and Lou Reed basically feeding over who Le went and started Le band more or whatever.
