Pantera's definitely heavier than most metal. Being noisy in the way death/black/sludge tend to be doesn't translate to heaviness. You need groove like Pantera. It's more obvious in a live setting I've seen a gazillion death metal bands live the past 16 years of my life and none go as hard as Pantera.

Anon DM musicians have passion but the music they make is about evil, darkness and murder. You do realize you're placing a standard that requires the musicians to be actually evil criminal people in real life. Art ought to be clearly separated from the artist in this instance, you can passionately write and enjoy listening to extreme metal, it can take you places, create an atmosphere in which you feel something, but because it's an extreme subject matter it should not be meditated on too much. It's fictitious by definition, like a movie, in that sense it can't be taken too seriously, it's not that the bands are dishonest. You're already comitting to something that is niche and doesn't pay, being a phony musician in this genre doesn't make sense.

Corpsegrinder has a sword collection but he's a pleasant fun guy to be around who doesn't sacrifice goats in the tour bus. None of them do, Alex and Paul are soft-spoken introverts. Very kind and humble.

and Erik Rutan is always joking around in the studio and has a grin on his face, and he's associated with the top death metal acts and is crushing it on stage. Same with Rob Barrett, cracking jokes, doing impressions. Does that make them not TRVE DM?

honestly I just want you guys to shut the fuck up and quit trying to explain why you like the metal you like because it ALWAYS boils down to how heavy it is. nothing else. metal musicians are usually incredible but they lack creativity and I think these genres just stifle it even further making an already limiting box of possibilities even smaller and more boring.

the only musician that doesn't fall into this box somehow but instead defines it himself is buckethead. he's got some of the heaviest fucking riffs I will ever hear and it doesn't just rely on straight chugging garbage. he's a good example of how you dip your toes in a genre and make it your own creatively.

I see what you mean, the subculture is related to a strong identity. Personally however I've researched the overarching philosophy of paganism and satanism a little and I don't find sound grounding if any, it's paperthin in a lot of areas. I like a few BM bands, it's an interesting aesthetic and feel but I'm not compelled to adopt the worldview associated with it. Still BM is good music, I know a few Darkthrone riffs, and one from Behemoth.
