A&R guys look for bands who have "the look", meaning at minimum a photogenic singer. The grunge guys would never have made it during the glam metal era, but by the early 90s having good hair and decent bone structure put you way above average in the alternative rock landscape. Like no girl was putting Michael Stipe on their wall (obviously).
