out of all of his records i think the doldrums is the purest distillation of the ariel pink sound. the doldrums has this kind of intangible magic about it that separates itself from his other albums like it was a total fluke that so many different pieces could come together to form such a perfect record. i love records that create a unique universe that you can explore and escape from your mundane reality and for me the doldrums is very much one of those kind of records. give it another chance, i wasn't totally enthralled by it at first either but eventually it will win you over

The sound is there, it's the songwriting that's lacking compared to his other albums. Arriving to the end of the record is a struggle

The Doldrums is such a bummer I wish I never heard it but I guess that's what I get for being a fucked up mentally ill freak.

Anyway my pick is Loverboy/House Arrest.

Pom Pom basically overshadowed it.

Suffered from a very bad tinny-sounding transfer for a long time until the remaster.

I enjoyed your take. It's one my favorites too.

I'm going to say Mature Themes because it's properly "brown" but with the polish of his post-Before Today work. It's as enjoyable and funny and weird as his cassette work.

Objectively he does not have a best album. He's too contrarian for that... so if you can't pick a favorite that's "the point"

I like all of them, except I like Matur Themes and Pom Pom less than the rest.
Underground and Oddities 3 are both really great, but I think them hitting streaming coincided with him getting canceled so neither got very much attention.
Never Made a Demo is good, too. Has a better version of Menopause Man than Before Today.

Oddities Sodomies Vol 1 has some of his best stuff. House Arrest and Word Copy are probably his best actual albums but Doldrums is great, Scared Famous is ridiculously underrated, and Before Today Pom Pom and Dedicated To Bobby Jameson are really great mainstream indie pop records

The Doldrums is his best and most consistent. Not a bad song. Feels like anhedonia in audible form

Either House Arrest or Worn Copy. There are probably a half dozen runner-ups though because he has a lot of great albums.

>anhedonia
Nailed it. This album is both comfy & dangerous when going through a break-up, a death in the family. I recall being so immersed into the world of The Doldrums that I played the CD for months trying to build up from scratch. It's probably the most consistent soundscape he's created, with each song teetering off into a further bleakness than the one before it, muddling more into thick muck. I'm just recalling here, haven't listened to this record in nearly a decade.
