Bob Weir was the most talented of the Grateful Dead
Talk about damning with faint praise.
>>126993608 (OP)I love Bobby, but it's either Jerry or Robert Hunter...
>>126993608 (OP)nothing against him but he definitely was not
>>126994466jerry was the best guitarist of all time.
lesh was also amazingly talented.
kreutzmann was underrated.
>>126994640Yeah, I mean... God love Mickey but the band sounded so much better without him...
>>126993608 (OP)More like the one with the least sovl
>>126994672idk, the 71-74 period was obviously amazing but i'd say despite and not in spite of mickey's absence
>>126993608 (OP)Can any of you oldheads answer this, what is an actual dead head? Rumors I've heard that every member did a thumb print, and if you want to join their actual club you have to take one to. Bull shit?
A thumb print is when you stick your thumb in pure liquid acid and you know, lick it off basically.
>>126995229>pure liquid acidguess my 1p-lsd doesn't count
>>126993608 (OP)Maybe after Pigpen died. Jerry was the most overrated artist in history.
>>126995229if you have to ask.. you're clearly off the bus. sorry bro...
>>126995229Get puddled ya fuckin pussy.
>>126993608 (OP)"It would be so epic if I said this."
>>126994466You're still trying too hard. It's either Jerry or Phil.
Bobby was a tool back in the old days. I actually like him as a rhythm guitarist, but he always gave off this energy like he was trying too hard. On Jerry's 31st birthday, they played an excellent version of Dark Star and were clearly building up to going into Eyes of the World, as they often did around that time. During the transition, Jerry played a lick that was reminiscent of El Paso, but it was pretty clear where they were taking it. Bobby saw this as his que to play El Paso, so he took the entire performance by the throat and rushed into a lazy El Paso that the rest of the band just had to go along with. Then they played Eyes like they were originally going to. It was a good enough performance, but it still didn't have the same power and momentum that it would have had had they just gone from Dark Star into Eyes as was clearly the original plan.
>>126993608 (OP)He was a better singer than Jerry, and Ace is a good, album, I'll give you that, but I was always a Philhead, as well as a Pig-Pen fan.
>And Jerry could play Circles around Bob any day of the week.
>>126998478>unexpected el paso transition after a legendary dark starthat also famously happened at the 8/27/72 Veneta,Oregon concert.
i mean yeah it's Bobby's fault but you can make peace with it after a few listens; it's like they bring you to deep space and just before reaching a universal absolute state of mind you get sent back to earth with the speed of a meteor to 1880s west Texas bc we shouldnt really take things that seriously
>>127000897It may have worked on the Veneta show, but it was neither the time nor place for it on the show I'm talking about.
>>126993608 (OP)He and Emma Watson both share the same face.
>>126994466This. How tf can you write ripple, brokedown palace, and to lay me down in one afternoon?
>>126994466Bill Graham is obviously the best member of the Grateful Dead, duh.
>>127004365How do you actually buy this in a liquor store? Like, what do you say?
>>126994640Wouldnt say he was the best, but he is instantly recognisable, you hear a couple of bars of jerry, you know who it is straight away.
>>126993608 (OP)Wier literally had to be schooled by Jerry and Phil
>>127004357Cornell is overrated, honestly i find no reason to listen to post-hiatus dead
in order, most essential to least
>Jerry/Hunter
>Phil
>Bill
>Bobby/Barlow
>Brent
>Pigpen
>Keith
>Mickey (bonus points for FOTM)
>Donna (she's actually pretty good from '76 onwards )
>Vince
>TC
>anyone else I'm forgetting
>>127006916It's so weird knowing that I'm older than this guy ever was. I've always seen him as an old man.
>>127006916What the fuck happened to this guy after, like, 1972? He sounded great initially and then he just... forgot how to play. He started parroting things that Jerry did or just playing like he wasn't listening to anyone else. It's too bad because he laid down some excellent playing during his first year or so in the band.
I read Phil Lesh autobiography, I got it at the dollar tree
apparently the Grateful Dead did drugs
>>127008700I miss this dude like you wouldn't believe
Jerry is in the conversation for best lead guitarist ever and was the heart and soul of the band. Phil was also a better musician than Bob, as was Brent. That said Weir is no slouch and has been a great captain of the ship the last 30 something years. Dead and Co is better than they should be.
>>127010537>only 32I thought he was only thirty. I'm thirty one right now. I just assumed that he died while he was still a member of the Grateful Dead.
>>127011266I saw Dead and Company in 2023. Weir was still pretty good. Been watching Long Strange Trip and it's a phenomenal documentary. I would kill to have a chance to see a peak dead show, but it was still an amazing set(s), especially for their age.
>>127011266I liked the songs where bob and jerry traded vocal lines, jack straw etc.
>>127008700Based Brent enjoyer putting him as #1 keys player.
>>127012750>I saw Dead and Company in 2023>>127016382>dead last"Dead Last" would make an entertaining name for a final show.
>>127006241The one reason I do is Terrapin Station, which is the best thing that came out of post-hiatus Dead. Aside from that, I pretty much agree with you. Everything after the hiatus feels like an attempt to reclaim the energy that they had in 1973-'74. Sometimes they got close, but it was always short lived. There are about five shows I can think of between 1976-1995 that can compete with the way they sounded before the hiatus.
>>126997599Durst was definitely a Deadhead at some point.
