It's listenable if you're accustomed to free jazz, and in that case it would sound hopelessly pedestrian.

Literally how, it's all just RIFFS and musical almost interchangeable musical subjects put together like Legos. It works cause the riffs are so good. Kinda like Death's later albums where the different sections in songs feel more interchangeable and less coherent, except most Trout Mask tracks are more elegantly put together than that thanks to Drumbo. If you listen to actual free jazz it's just a bunch of random crap and no good licks riffs and melodies (or maybe I'm just too retarded to hear them)

Whenever you hear people say this about music they dislike, you can immediately disregard everything they say.
I have to wonder what these pseuds even think the word means.

He didn't say it WAS free jazz - just that if you're accustomed to listening to free jazz, you will see some commonality in this. Which is obvious if you're not a retard snobby contrarian and are familiar with free jazz and TMR. Of course, you can't even read properly

This whole thing is through-composed and the closest musical analogue are the works of Terry Riley and to a lesser extent La Monte Young.

Bill Harkleroad and Jeff Cotton are probably among the best guitarists in rock music, but nothing on TMR is particularly impressive apart from the discipline and ability to consistently play this rather unintuitive music.

So the story that Beefheart wrote the whole album on a piano and made the drummer write down is bullshit right?
He couldn't even play an instrument

Why would it be bullshit? The way I interpret that story is that Beefheart came up with a number of disparate parts by clumsily banging it out on the piano, then French arranged them as best he could into these neat minimalist vignettes.

It's hard to believe it's not true. What would drumbo and everyone else get out of going all these decades pretending that beefheart came up with all the bits on piano? Drumbo would want to take credit for having done more, and the rest would be like no we wrote it in the studio together we weren't taking dictation from drumbo. And they wouldn't just follow berfheart around if he wasn't a creative force
