This is what REALLY killed the Beach Boys. They made great strides to establish their own 70s sound with new musicians, but decided that they needed to money so they reverted back to standards and throwback 50s music with a god-awful album cover that looked lke the kind of compilation records you'd see in the bargain bin, and never recovered.

For that you can entirely blame Mike for refusing to let 1961-65 go all because he was spiteful that American radio stopped caring about them by the late 60s.

>helped
The albums that came after this, aside from Love You which was bascially a Brian album, were lackluster, like LA Light Album, and MIU, Keepin the Summer Alive etc

Love you is good even with the gimmick of 50s/60s music with moogs. After that only Brian's solo debut album was the last remarkable thing related to the band (no, the Smiles of the 00s don't count)

Honestly the blame can be put squarely on George Lucas with American Graffiti, that movie showed the execs that 50/early 60s nostalgia could sell and that gave whoever the fuck at the Beach Boys to pander to that nostalgia, it doesn't help that whole Brian's Back! debacle

Never said it was bad, just said that it set the precedent to sell baby boomers nostalgia for shit they remember it more fondly than they should
