As a kid, I always thought of Ozzy as BEING Black Sabbath, but getting older it's become clear that he was just window dressing for the most solid riffs ever concoted.

Unlike a lot of metal bands I think Black Sabbath was equal parts its four members. Also Tony Martin era Sabbath is really good and I'll always think of him as a legitimate member.

Both true statements.

And the later era Sabbath lineups are legit, even if nothing equals the original.

They were all great, but Iommi is the clear protagonist in every album they ever made imo. Switch him out with any other guitar player and enough would be lost as to make the end product not sabbath. Can't say that for any other member.

Iommi is Sabbath. He's the only permanent member. "Seventh Star" was originally a solo album of his, FFS.

It's true:
>It was originally written, recorded, and intended to be the first solo album by Iommi. Because of the pressures from Warner Bros. Records and the prompting of band manager Don Arden, the record was billed as Black Sabbath featuring Tony Iommi.

plebeians always focus on the leads, patricians understand that Ward and Butler were the best rhythm section in rock history

He had worse solos than Blackmore and Page and he was technically a less advanced guitarist than them but his riffs MOG the shit out of Led Zep riffs and Purple riffs

I disagree, his solos are simply different. Blackmore and Page were maybe more melodic and followed a more straightforward blues logic, but Iommi could also shred some very tasteful, psychedelic and hard rocking solos.

Pretty much true, however, I find the way he used solos to be a lot more satisfying. Also just as a matter of taste, the places he took solos were more interesting in my opinion. Not to mention the dude had 2 fingers cut off before Sabbath was even a thing.
